Home-Work is Home-Talk
The Pre-K 4 students will have many opportunities to practice their literacy and math skills throughout the day in large group, small group, and individual settings.
In class, the children will be participating in hands-on, manipulative work that is developmentally appropriate. With that said, our Jolly Phonics curriculum does provide some supplemental work-book pages. Each child will receive the practice pages on Monday, and they are to stay at home (I will not be collecting these). This means that the homework is an OPTIONAL assignment. If your child does choose to try the work-pages, work alongside him/her and talk about the letter sound as they are writing. If your child chooses not to complete the work-pages, I strongly suggest you spend the time reviewing the letter sounds presented.
Once a month I will send home a “Home-Talk” assignment. The date will be marked on my classroom calendar. There will also be a note on the calendar for when the Home-Talk should be returned to school. So what exactly is Home-Talk? Home-Talk will inform you of our current thematic unit of study and what types of activities we are doing in the classroom. I will then provide a prompt that you will share with your child so that the two of you can engage in a conversation about what we are doing in school! I will then provide a space for you to record what you and your child discussed and you can attach any pictures or artifacts that you find important. Finally, once the Home-Talk is returned to school, your child will have an opportunity to share his/her Home-Talk with classmates. It will also be displayed in the room! This is also an OPTIONAL assignment, but highly encouraged!
