| REACHING OUT TO EACH OTHER IN CHRIST
School Theme 2007-2008
May 18, 2008
Two weeks have now gone by and we have had a great many events in the Third
Grade.
First, our mass on the 9th was wonderful! We have had an awesome year
leading our school in prayer. In addition to our mass that week, we also
did the prayer over the PA each morning. Thank you to the students who did
such an outstanding job leading the school each morning in a prayer to Mary.
Second, also on the 9th we were visited by the Downers Grove Fire Department
and their equipment. A big thank you again to Officer Marsha Geisler for
her hard work in putting this program together. We loved climbing into the
drivers seat of the fire truck and hanging out in the ambulance as we
learned about all of the equipment on these vehicles. We also learned that
you have to be a very fast dresser to be a fire fighter. Our fire fighter
was dressed in full gear in 40 seconds! Absolutely Amazing!!!
This past week we were very busy preparing and then going on our History of
Downers Grove field trip. We finished some last minute information on
Downers Grove in class on Mnday and Tuesday and then on Wednesday it was off
to the museum and bus tour. Thank you to Mrs. Testin, Mrs. Albian, Grandma
Shirley, Mrs. Swider and Mrs. McManus for chaperoning this trip. Most
especially thanks to Grandma Shirley for sharing her lifelong knowledge of
Downers Grove. I know I have some new facts to share with next year's 3rd
graders. The museum was awesome and I highly recommend you visit it
sometime. Our village has such a rich and well preserved history. The bus
tour had us completing a scavenger hunt and visiting the site of the Pierce
Downer cemetery. An awesome experience was had by all.
On Friday we were visited by the museum again and a presentation by the Plow
Boys. This is the museum baseball team that plays by rules from 1858. A
big thanks to Christa (museum supervisor) and all the men who came to talk
to our third grade class. We are looking forward to opening day which is
June 1st at 2:30 p.m. at Herrick Park. Please be certain to ask your
student about being a crank or crankette!!
We have had some wonderful Secret Readers these past two weeks.
On May 9th- Mrs. Sczepanik read One Potato, Two Potato a
story of a poor Irish couple who find a lucky pot and all the things that
happen to them along the way. We learned that we don't have to have
everything to be happy, just the right things!
On May 16th - Mr. Maurer came and read to us Chicken
Sunday by Patricia Polacco. Mr. Maurer shared with us this wonderful story
and some personal accounts of growing up with a grandmother who loved to
cook. We learned how to make good choices and share God's gifts with
others. Thank you Mr. Maurer for your heartfelt stories and enthusiam.
Wishing you a wonderful week!
Mrs. Neumann
