April / May 2012

It is hard to believe that our school year is nearing the end. The class has
been working hard. We had a wonderful experience at Lorado Taft for Outdoor
Education. Please keep an eye on the case by the main office for especially
good essays on our adventures. They should be showing up soon.

Literature: We are well engrossed in the non-fiction unit. We have finished
our stories about Abdul Rahman. He was an African prince sold into slavery
in colonial times. We have know begun our fiction/fantasy unit. Ask your
student about the alternative “Three Little Pigs” story.

Religion: We have finished our “Family Life” unit. The students are looking
forward to picking up the “Christ is Life” book and going in depth about
Moses.

Vocabulary: Students have been working hard. We are using words
with “Certainty and Uncertainty” as well as words from previous lessons.
Let’s hear it for extra credit points, Smarties, and DumDums.
Language Arts: We have worked hard on our essays about Lorado Taft and have
now started a new essay on a subject of the students’ choosing. We have also
been learning about the proper way to use confusing words such as good and
well and can and may.

Science: We are continuing our unit on Ecology. The students are using what
they have learned at outdoor education and applying it to their daily lessons.

Social Science: Students have finished their Greek Mythology presentations.
Some of their poems should also be appearing in the case by the office.
Their work is most impressive. We also have been discussing Current Events
on Friday afternoons. I always enjoy listening to 6th grade perspectives.
We hope to also include Junior Achievement this year. Our final unit will
involve how the justice system words.

May everyone have a safe and fun summer break. See you in the Fall.
