
From Math to Science and everything in between, we will spend our days
learning new concepts, refreshing our minds about old ones, and strengthen
our skills on some of the ones that need it.
In each subject, we will cover many areas and concepts. We will complete
activities, make illustrations, and watch the occasional movie to enhance
our learning.
Here is a brief list for each subject so you can get an idea of what will be
covered during 5th grade.
Math:
1. Fractions --- Adding and subtracting
Multiplying and dividing
2. Multiplying and dividing decimals
3. Prime factorization trees
4. Divisibility
5. Geometry
Spelling:
* Each unit will focus on a different concept
1. Students will write words 5x each
2. Students will also alternate between sentences and paragraphs using the
words each week
English:
1. Writing a personal narrative
2. Writing a summer book
3. Writing a report about any topic the students choose
4. Poetry --- Diamante
Free Verse
Haiku
5. Sentence diagraming
Social Studies:
1. The original 13 colonies
2. Slave trading
3. How the early settlers got to America
4. Famous explorers like Balboa, De Soto, Magellan, and Columbus
5. Map Skills
Reading:
* Each unit will explore a different concept
1. Slavery
2. Friendship
3. Acceptance of others
** We will also read at least 3 novels as a class:
A. Island of the Blue Dolphins (Scott O'Dell)
B. Because of Winn-Dixie (Kate DiCamillo)
C. Esio Trot (Roald Dahl)
Religion:
1. Prayers
2. Stations of the cross
3. Liturgical seasons of Lent, Advent, and Ordinary Time
4. Catholic holidays like Christmas, Easter, and Pentecost
