The chemistry laboratory is a place for serious and careful work. To
ensure that a safe and healthful environment is maintained, all students
should read and follow the safety regulations listed below.
1. Your concern for safety should begin even before the first activity.
Always read and think about each laboratory assignment before starting.
2. Unauthorized or unsupervised laboratory experimenting is not allowed.
3. Wear eye and clothing protection while working in the laboratory. Tie
back loose hair.
4. Check chemical labels twice to make sure you have the correct substance.
Some formulas and names may differ by only a letter or number.
5. When pouring a reagent, take onlywhat you need. Do not return any excess
material to its original container unless authorized vy your teacher.
6. Never taste anything in a chemical laboratory. Gum, food or drinks should
should not be brought into the laboratory.
7. To smell a reagent or product, hold the container well away from your
nose. Wave your hand over the top to push some of the vapor toward your
nose. Never put your nose directly over a container.
8. Follow directions for adding chemicals to each other carefully. If the
directions tell you to "add A to B," then add A to B; do not add B to A.
9. Before leaving the laboratory, return equipment, chemicals, aprons,
goggles to their designated locations. Make sure that gas lines and water
faucets are shut off.
10. If in doubt, ask!
