Dear Parents/Guardians, I am a graduate of DePaul University in Chicago, Illinois with a M.Ed. in Computer Science, a M.S. in E-Commerce Technology and a B.S. in Computer Science . My Illinois State Board of Education Certificate is valid for Secondary Teaching in Computer Science (High School and Middle Grade) and Business Computing. I look forward to working with your student as they learn more about computers and technology. Please feel free to visit the website to know exactly what your student is working on: http://teacherweb.com/IL/Steinmetz/McSwine/ At this time, I would like to share some important information regarding the course in which your daughter/son is enrolled this semester. <font color="#33cc00"><b>Course Description</b></font> <font color="#990000">Computer Software Applications I: 79710</font> This course advances the Microsoft Office skills in Info Processing 66810. Students will advance the knowledge they have acquired using Microsoft Word, Excel, Publisher and PowerPoint. Opportunities will be made available for students to get Microsoft certifications. <font color="#990000">Information Processing: 66810</font> This course builds on the basic skills in Computer Info Tech 71910. The course integrates advanced Microsoft Office word processing, excel, publisher and PowerPoint. There will also be a unit on access and Internet searching and skills required for the PSAE. Opportunities will be made available for students to get Microsoft certifications. <font color="#990000">Computer Info Tech: 71910</font> The Freshman Technology course is designed to prepare students for the practical use of technology and to enhance math skills through interactive computer-based learning techniques. Support of other educational disciplines and exposure to computer careers is also given. Additionally, the course provides basic concepts of various applications; word processing, spreadsheets, databases, web browsers. <font color="#33cc00"><b>Course Objectives:</b></font> <ol>To Build on or achieve the following: <li> Keyboarding Skills; </li> <li> Literacy, especially regarding technology</li> <li> Proficiency in operating computers and related peripherals</li> <li> Expertise at using Microsoft applications: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access and Publisher</li> <li> Familiarity with Academic/Professional uses of the Internet.</li> <li> Web development skills *Computer Software Applications. only</li> </ol> <font color="#33cc00"><b>Materials and Supplies:</b></font> Paper, pencils, pens, two pocket spiral binder to keep class notes, handouts, quizzes, tests, computer projects, and other assignments & a jump drive for storage of large files. <font color="#33cc00"><b>Required Class work and Homework Policy: </b></font> Students will be required to participate in classroom activities (asking/answering questions, taking notes, and sharing observations). Students will also be required to review notes at home and complete assigned homework. There will be daily Bellringer quizzes given right after the starting bell for class has rung. If a student is not in the classroom when the bell rings he/she will receive a grade of zero. <font color="#33cc00"><b>Making Up Quizzes/Exams:</b></font> If students miss a scheduled quiz or exam, they need to make up the quiz or exam the following day (or as soon as they come back to school) by making an arrangement with me. Otherwise, students will receive a 0 for that exam or quiz. For any extenuating circumstances, students may leave me a message at 773.534.3030, or send me an e- mail at lcmcswine@cps.edu <font color="#33cc00"><b>Class Expectations and Grade Requirements: </b></font>Students are expected to follow school and classroom policies. His/her overall grade will be based on the components listed below and a final grade will be awarded based on the following scale. CATEGORIES WEIGHT SCALE <u>Final Exam 10% A = 90 � 100% Quizzes 10% B = 80 � 89% Bell ringers 10% C = 70 � 79% Cmptr Asgn 25% D = 60 � 69% Vocabulary 15% F < 60 Projects/Exams 20% Participation 10% TOTAL 100% </u> *Note: Class Participation includes asking/answering questions, working productively with classmates, punctuality, and general comportment in computer lab. <font color="#33cc00"><b>Computer Lab Rules:</b></font> � You may not bring food, drink or gum into the computer lab. � You will not deface or destroy any equipment in the lab. � You will not install any software on any server or hard drive. � You will not change anything on the PC desktop or any environment variables of any software application. A student will not be allowed to use the Internet unless they are "Internet Approved." Failure to adhere to the computer lab rules and/or the Internet Acceptable Usage Policy can result in disciplinary action, which could result in suspension or worse.
