CPS Varsity Championship 5/5/12
It was the perfect storm.

With the help of Sammy Balbuena, Heiddy Rodas, Momo Rafael, and Lauren DeJesus we had advanced to the finals earlier in the week (see previous posting).

The reconfigured finals team included Lucy Licona and Tiarra McGee.  The new team's mission was simple....make that great effort of your teammates mean something by seizing upon the opportunity.
I really don't think anybody expected what happened next.

Jelly Jimenez started things off with a personal best for her blistering leg, then came Fanny Reyes, setting herself a brand new personal best also.  Too good to be true, maybe, but captain Lucy Licona followed up with her best 800m of the year.   And, finally, fellow senior Tiarra McGee finished it all off with, yes you guessed it, her best 800m of the year.
Like I said, the perfect storm.  It was exactly as exciting as it sounds.  I don't think any team (or coach) has been more proud of finishing in 7th place.

Meanwhile, across the field, senior Katherine Zavala held on to take 10th in the city in the discus throw.

It was a great day.  Just thinking about it makes me smile.

CPS Varsity Championship Trials 5/1/12
As our season draws to a close, it is really with a heavy heart that I compose these last few entries in our journal.

This time around I will start with the last event of the day.  Our 4x400m Relay team was in the last heat of the last event running at at 9:00pm at night.  It had rained steadily for 4 hours and they were cold, wet, and miserable.
Twice I met with the team in the pouring rain and twice they informed me that they intended to stay and tough it out.  The stadium was empty except for the girls left behind to race.  Luckily for us, we had some of our stalwart supporting teammates still there.
When that gun went off, our girls all went for it.  This is one of the more competitive events in Chicago Girls' Track and we were not even ranked in the top 20 teams.  But our group of Jelly Jimenez, Heiddy Rodas, Jazelyn Viruet, and Tiarra McGee were clearly not interested in getting beat.  They all four romped through their legs and made a great race of it.
And that is how a team not expected to make the top 20 actually grabs 11th place!!

In the Discus Throw we got another super surprise from first year senior Katherine Zavala.  She has steadily improved her technique throughout the season and threw a solid mark during a deluge to advance to the finals on Saturday.  It is so tough not to think about what might have been had we discovered Katherine a few years ago!

We were really not sure if our 4x800m Relay was going to make it to the finals this year.  Although we aren't usually mentioned as one of the teams to watch, we have consistently advanced to the finals in this relay for several years now.  And we consistently beat most teams.  This year, a couple of our regular girls could not be in it for the qualifying trials.  We were definitely in a bind.
But we managed to put together a very tough rag-tag team and send them out on a mission.  Sure enough, and against all odds, that team of Jelly Jimenez, Heiddy Rodas, Fanny Reyes, and Sammy Balbuena went out and got us into the big dance.  Not a one of them held anything back in this race.  I think I smiled the whole time.

Our sprint crew had several very disappointing near misses.  And even though they are all a bit saddened right now, it was incredibly clear to all of us watching that they did not hold anything back either.  Charnae Turner, Kelvina Taylor, Elizabeth Queen, Tiarra McGee, Jazelyn Viruet, Cecilia Caudel, and Brianna Harris all deserve special props for their composure and grace in the face of repeated bouts of adversity.

And, finally, let's recognize a few lonely athletes out there in the field events with nobody but their coaches around to see them.  They really showed some Lady Streaks heart.  Donneka Anderson and Daria Gonzalez in the Shot Put and, of course, our fabulous Salma Zaghdoud in the Triple Jump.  Wow.

I realize that I am sounding like a broken record, but a huge thank you must also go out to all of our teammates who stuck it out with us in this most horrible of weather experiences.
So thank you so much to Berry Barajas, Janette Ocampo, Malene Sanchez, Lizbeth Gomez, Cintia Garcia, Brenda Escalante, Diana Herrera, Isabella Valdez, Victoria Jackson, Widangelys Ortiz, Arely MoralesGloria Sanchez, Julissa Garces, Lauren DeJesus, Momo Rafael, and Vanessa Hernandez

CPS Girls' F/S Championship 4/27/12
This brutally cold and windy night could have been a disaster.  But, in typical form, our girls all stuck together and made it look far easier than it was.  They really looked more like seasoned veterans than first year competitors.

Before you read on, please bear in mind that this city has more than 120 high schools!

Most of our varsity girls, came out to support their new teammates....and the support was simply incredible.

This school should be very proud of the contributions these girls make.  The meet managers were in awe of how much initiative our athletes took in helping to manage things.  The Steinmetz girls pretty much single-handedly kept the events rolling.  It was a sight to behold.  It was magic.

Our performances were equally great to see.  The 4x800m relay team of Arely Morales, Brenda Escalante, Cintia Garcia, and Diana Herrera took 8th place.  That is 8th place in the whole City of Chicago.  Julissa Garces toughed it out in the high jump for a 6th place finish.  Victoria Jackson threw a personal best to take 6th place in the discus throw and 11th in the shot put.  In both the 4x100m and 4x200m relays our squads took 14th place honors.  And Isabella Valdez pitched in with 13th place in the discus and 14th place in the shot.
Gloria Sanchez, Widangelys Ortiz, and Jocelyne Segovia rounded out our small, but tough, team.  and every one of them stayed on to the very end to cheer their teammate Cintia on in the dark, cold, windy 1600m Run.

Also there to the bitter end was that great contingent of shivering, but smiling juniors and seniors from the varsity team.  These girls managed the hurdles, helped judge exchange zones, served as timers, moved starting blocks around, AND took great care of their younger teammates--you hear them cheering during every event.

Every time we needed something important done, one of these girls would appear out of nowhere and just do it!  It was like having a dozen extra coaches!

So a special thanks to you older girls--Brianna Harris, Kelvina Taylor, Jelly Jimenez, Sammy Balbuena, Lizbeth Gomez, Salma Zaghdoud, Cecilia Caudel, Lucy Licona, Lauren DeJesus, Fanny Reyes, Heather Duffy, and Heiddy Rodas---you are truly in a league of your own!

CPS North Conference 4/23/12
We took a lot away from this meet....including the win.

With barely any coaching, this team put together a solid meet against several of our north side rival teams---and had some super experiences in the process.

Julissa Garces improved her personal best in the high jump and Diana Herrera continued to improve as well (they took first and second place).  Donneka Anderson came through for us in the shot and discus as did Katherine Zavala and Victoria Jackson.  Also in the field we got points from Charnae Turner in the long jump and Salma Zaghdoud in the triple jump.

Out on the track we did a ton of cool things.
With Cecilia Caudel standing in at lead off and Heiddy Rodas at anchor, our Medley relay team did great.  Ditto for the 4x100m with Charnae, Cecilia, Brianna Harris, and Kelvina Taylor.

Our three 4x800m squads also made a strong statement.  This race featured a leadership  squad including Lucy Licona, Jelly Jimenez, Fanny Reyes, and Sammy Balbuena; our energetic freshies featuring  Brenda Escalante, Cintia Garcia, Diana Herrera, and Arely Morales; and the senior citizens group (all seniors) of Lizbeth Gomez, Vanessa Hernandez, Momo Rafael, and Lauren DeJesus

Finally, in the 1600m, both Cintia and Fanny charged through the race to take first and third with Sammy coming in close behind them setting herself a new personal record.

To close things out we fielded a bunch of 4x400m relay teams.
This event is the true test of a team's strength and commitment.  With awesome (even heroic) efforts by Heiddy Rodas, Daria Gonzalez, and Gloria Sanchez---as well as pretty much everyone else----we capped off a definitive meet victory.

As I looked around at the end of the day I saw most of our girls (we never plan to leave early) still in the stands cheering on their teammates.

Luther North Invitational 4/14/12
Despite the daylong threatening weather, we pulled off some great things in this meet.

In the 1600m run both Cintia Garcia and Diana Herrera made great improvments in their personal best times.  Tiarra McGee took 2nd place in both the 100m dash and the 400m dash.  Donneka Anderson came away with 3rd place in the shot put and 6th place in the discus.
Our newly combined sprint relay teams worked hard together to make improvements.  The 4x100m group was Elizabeth Queen, Brianna Harris, Kelvina Taylor, and Charnae Turner and the 4x200m team was Brianna, Jazelyn Viruet, Kenesha Gillespie, and Charnae.
Both groups learned a lot and we are all getting into a good groove going into some of our biggest meets of the year.

Steinmentz/Jones/Mather 4/7/12
These kinds of meets always take me back....
It was a beautiful spring day and we really had a great time.

The level of sportsmanship and co-operation between teams was a thing to behold.

Nearly every girl on our squad ran multiple events.  Many of them were trying things for the first time (which is getting to be a regular thing for us).  New jumpers jumped, new throwers threw, and many girls took their first shot at everything from sprint relays to hurdles.

Coaches dream about having teams with this much spirit and commitment.
...we are very lucky.

One of the meet highlights was the 1600m run where Cintia Garcia and Fanny Reyes both ran their personal best times while their teammate, Tiarra McGee, dispatched the school record in the event.  Tiarra now holds the distance trifecta with the 1600m, 3200m, and 3-mile school records.

Among some of our hardest working girls at this one were our very serious freshmen.  Arely Morales seemed like she was everywhere, Diana Herrera jumped into events without hesitation, and Brenda Escalante ran like an upper-classman.
Also incredibly notable was junior Jelly Jimenez who led the 4x800m to victory and ran back to back events in the 4x200m and 300m hurdles.

All of the coaches were very busy with meet management--which puts a lot of the organizing pressure on the athletes.  But every team stepped up the keep the meet orderly and friendly.
A very special thanks to those parents who came out on a holiday weekend to support the team!

Mather Invitational 3/31/12
I could never be more proud of this team than at the close of this meet when 20 of them (half the team!) ran as multiple 4x400m relay teams.  Almost every other team had fallen apart or headed home, but not our girls.

Our girls came to run.  And every one of them left it all out on the track.

After the races--we got to see one of the most special things about this group--everyone checking on each other to make sure we were all ok.  You just don't see much of that going on in the other camps.  There was a lot of hugging and team pride....really, you would have to be made of stone not to get a little emotional.

We finished fifth in the team standings in a field of 21 teams.  Awesome performances by our 4x800m (Jelly Jimenez, Cintia Garcia, Lucy Licona, Tiarra McGee) and 4x100m (Elizabeth Queen, Brianna Harris, Kelvina Taylor, Charnae Turner) relay teams got us off to a great early start.  In the field we took 4th in the high jump (Julissa Garces), 2nd in the discus and 3rd in the shot (Paulina Ciepiela), and 6th in the discus (Katherine Zavala).  Tiara McGee snagged 6th place in the 400m dash, Jazelyn Viruet came in 7th in the 100m hurdles, and our 4x400m team of Jelly Jimenez, Sammy Balbuena, Fanny Reyes, and Cintia Reyes capped off the day in style.

This was the 12th and final Mather Invitational and, although it is the end of an era, we want to thank the coaching staff at Mather.  We certainly had a lot of fun!

Mt. Assisi Fast Times 3/24/12
This meet is always very competitive and, as our last indoor competition of the season, is our springboard on to the big track.  There were 25 solid teams--which made for great competition as well as great viewing.

As usual for this season we had a lot of athletes trying new things.  Elizabeth Queen looked great in her first try at the hurdles; Salma Zaghdoud got her feet wet in the triple jump; Widangelys Ortiz and Heiddy Rodas both took a shot at the 400m dash for the first time; ditto for Diana Herrera in the 800m; and Gloria Sanchez gave the long jump a try.  After moving into sprints from distance, Kenesha Gillespie looked great in the 4x200m relay.  It takes a lot of courage to try something new...especially in such daunting conditions.

Our 4x800m relay of Jelly Jimenez, Fanny Reyes, Cintia Garcia, and Tiarra McGee finished way ahead of the pace of last year's record-breaking group.  They only missed the school record by a few seconds--and we haven't even gone outdoors yet.  The same group ran the 4x400m late in the meet and really held their own against sprint groups.

Speaking of sprints, although our 4x200m including Elizabeth Queen, Lequeshia Milton, Kenesha Gillespie, and Charnae Turner, had a minor hiccup, we have really improved over the past few weeks.

Time for the big track now...

Chicago Indoor Invitational 3/18/12
We scored points in nearly every event on this hot winter day (I know).
Every girl who competed deserves mention, but the teammates who came along to help manage the meet and support their fellow athletes deserve a tremendous round of applause of credit too!  The whole team represented our school incredibly well.

We came in 4th in a field of 15 teams by picking up points in a huge variety of events.  In the field, Julissa Garces took both 2nd in the High Jump and 4th in the Triple Jump; and Kelvina Taylor came in 5th in the Long Jump as did Paulina Ciepiela in the Shot Put.

Out on the track, we started off by coming from the back of the pack to take 4th in the 4x800m with a cobbled together team including Brenda Escalante, Jelly Jimenez, Sammy Balbuena, and Cintia Garcia.  This great finish was followed up by Jazelyn Viruet coming in 5th in the Hurdles, Fanny Reyes taking 4th in the 1600m, and Tiarra McGee finishing 4th in the 200m Dash as well as a strong 2nd in the 800m Run.

It seemed like every time we turned around we heard the name of one our teammates being announced in the results!

Evanston Township 3/1/12
Evanston girls have won 7 state championships in recent years and Loyola Academy (another team at the meet) is one of the stronger girls' teams in the state as well.

We really held our own in this one despite having to compete with such tough teams.  There was definitely no let down after our first meet as we continue to improve and do the right things---having a good time all the while.  Very frequently we heard the question from the crowd, "Who is that green team??"....which always warms my heart.

Bloom Township 2/18/12
This was one of our best opening meets in years.  Every girl on the team pitched in to help make it an amazing experience.  Half of the team competed in events for their first time ever and almost 30 different Streaks got a chance to compete.  With the awesome support of their teammates everyone got through it very well.

Typically in this competitive meet we are just trying to get our feet wet, but this year we got serious and took a few high finishes.  We came home with second in the 800 (Tiarra McGee), fourth and eighth in the 1600 (Jelly Jimenez and Brenda Escalante), fourth and seventh in the 3200 (Cintia Garcia and Fanny Reyes).  And we also got some great starts in the throws by Donneka Anderson and Paulina Ciepiela and the jumps by Kelvina Taylor and Lucy Licona.

Our newly selected captains, Momo RafaelJazelyn ViruetSammy Balbuena, and Lucy Licona, really came through for us and helped keep everyone on track (get it?).  This was a really fun start to what looks like a very exciting season for us.

Pre-Season 2012
It looks like we will have one of the most balanced teams we have had in a long time going in to this season.  Although many of our sprinters are new to the sport we show a lot of promise.  Returning speedsters include Brianna Harris, Elizabeth Queen, Kelvina Taylor, and Charnae Turner.  We add to that several exciting new girls and things look very promising.

Unlike the past few years, we are also starting the season with some exciting field athletes, in both jumps and throws, including Daria Gonzalez, Donneka Anderson, Paulina Ciepiela, Jazelyn Viruet, and Julissa Garces.

On the distance side we have some nice depth that includes most of the talent from this Fall's successful cross country squad.  This talented group includes Sammy Balbuena, Lauren DeJesus, Brenda Escalante, Cintia Garcia, Diana Herrera, Jelly Jimenez, Lucy Licona, Tiarra McGee, Monserrat Rafael, and Fanny Reyes.  Add in a couple more fresh faces including Lequeshia MiltonKenesha Gillespie, and Widangelys Ortiz and this year should be some good times (get it?).

DID YOU KNOW THAT...

More than 90% of NCAA soccer players ran track in high school?

Less that one tenth of one percent of people ever run competitive cross country? (that's one in a thousand---and in school is your only opportunity to ever do it!)

Nationally, cross country runners are the most successful student athletes and have the highest average GPA?

Many female endurance athletes are iron deficient and require a supplement to avoid fatigue?
