Course Description: Beginning Band is the first level of the band program at Steinmetz Academic Centre. In this class students will have the opportunity to choose and learn a woodwind, brass or percussion instrument or continue with their chosen instrument in a group setting. The specific aim of the band program is to enable students to communicate effectively through instrumental music and to understand and value a variety of musical and cultural expressions throughout life. Course Objective: By participating in the Steinmetz Academic Centre band program, students will:
Prerequisite: None Instructional Materials: Standard of Excellence Book 1, handouts, and worksheets. Student Materials: Standard of Excellence Book 1, 2 pencils, Woodwinds: At least three working #2 or 2 1/2 reeds, Brass: Mouthpiece, Valve Oil . Percussion: Sticks, mallets, stickbag. Rental instruments are highly recommended but not required.
Assignments: As assigned from the Standard of Excellence workbook
Homework: Practice instrument, worksheets and vocabulary as assigned.
Grading: Daily Participation Points: 25% In-class Assignments and Assessments 25% Performances: 50%
Grading Scale: 90 and above=A 80-89=B 70-79=C 60-69=D Below 59=F
Formative Assessments: Performance of assignments from book, (MIMS); bell ringers;
Summative Assessments: 5 week common course assessments; Playing tests; unit examinations; weekly vocabulary quizzes;
Attendance: It is extremely important that students attend class every day and are on time. “March to Music” will be in full effect this year! The doors to the Bandroom and the Choir side will be locked after the second bell rings and the music stops. After this, only students with tardy passes will be admitted. This will also cause you to lose your daily points for the day and repeated offenses can result in a failure for the course. Students who have an excused absence must make up any work missed within one week of return (excluding extended excused absence).
Attendance Policy: Per CPS attendance policy, “Students who have unexcused absences in 20% [18 days] of the classes in a particular course during the period for which a unit of credit is earned shall not pass the course and shall receive no credit towards promotion.” Therefore, 18 days of such absence will result in failure of the course.
