Homework

Homework will be sent home Monday through Thursday in the Komensky folder that is located in your child's LION book. Some parental assistance will be necessary. We encourage families to find a special place to do homework each night. The perfect spot would be a quiet location in your home that offers few distractions and where some basic supplies (pencils, erasers, crayons) can be easily located. (The kitchen table is a favorite place for many families.)
Homework for first graders should take approximately 1/2 hour. If you find it is taking considerably longer, please let me know so we can work together to find a solution.
Please make sure the homework is put back into the LION book folder so it can be checked in the next day.
Of course, there will be nights when the work just can not get done. Life happens! Please just let me know by calling (708-795-2342 X4419)by sending me a note. The same applies if you find that the homework is too difficult for your child. (It should be a reiew of something already done in class.) Your child will not be penalized and will be given another night to complete the assignment.

One of the homework assignments will always be to read together at home. In the beginning, it will be an adult reading to your child, as s/he follows along. As the year progresses, your child will take on the responsibility of reading. This is a great time to talk about the books, characters and illustrations. I will send home some suggestions for what to talk about if you need ideas. You will be able to see first hand the amazing growth that happens in your child's learning in first grade. It is truly amazing and exciting to witness as they discover what they can do!! Reading alone or with someone else every day will make the biggest difference in your child's education.

Nothing done in the classroom can replace what is done as a child tries to apply strategies to read.

I want you to know how grateful I am to be given the opportunity to

participate and cooperate with you in your child's education.
