Did you know that IRONY single-handedly makes the majority of all one-liners
funny? In other words, a stuffy Englishy word like IRONY is the reason why we
laugh at jokes. Consider:
Q: Why did the chicken cross the road?
A: To get to the other side.
This is hysterically funny because it is ironic.
So, IRONY is defined as the discrepancy between what is expected and what
actually happens. Do not confuse this with SARCASM, however, which is a lower
form of IRONY that usually implies a meaning exactly opposite of what is said.
IRONY = a difference in what is expected and what happens
SARCASM = the opposite of what is said or done
