A brief overview of the subjects taught
in
2nd grade:
Spelling
Your child will bring home his/her
spelling list on Monday. There is a special pocket in the F.R.O.G. book for
this list. You can keep it in there, or put it somewhere safe at home to
study throughout the week. There will be a final test on Friday.
Math
Saxon Math has the philosophy
that mathematics builds on prior learning. New concepts are presented in
increments, with time in between for practice. Your help with reinforcing
these concepts by actively participating in homework is so important and
appreciated! Some of the concepts we will study this year are addition and
subtraction facts, money, telling time to 5 minute intervals, basic geometric
shapes, measurement, fractions, and 2 digit addition with regrouping.
Reading Workshop
Your child and a small group of
students with similar needs will meet with me frequently for guided reading.
We will read books that are leveled to meet their needs and work on skills and
strategies to help your child become an even better reader! While I work with
this small group, the rest of my students will work on literacy centers with a
partner or small group around the room. These centers might include computer,
listening, overhead projector, read the room, write the room, creative
writing, silent reading, buddy reading, and more! This is an exciting time
for the students as they are immersed with literacy-rich activities!
I will also meet with our class
as a whole group to read stories out of our basal reader, do phonics/word
study, learn words from the word wall and read aloud from many different
books.
Science and Social Studies
Science and Social Studies units of study
will be kicked off by using a big book to introduce the theme. We will
integrated the units throughout the stories we read during reading workshop
and our literacy centers. Scholastic News will also be used to supplement the
learning.
Writing Workshop
This year your child will participate in
writing workshop. This includes a time of writing, conferencing with the
teacher, revising, editing, publishing, and sharing their work with the rest
of the class. We will use the 6 traits of writing in our classroom to make
sure our writing has ideas, voice, sentence fluency, word choice, conventions,
and organization.
