Shoe Tying Tips for at Home
Here are the websites for shoe tying instructions.
The first is the video modeling clip. The second is from Ian's Shoetying website. It has pictures for sequencing. You'll notice that the pictures show one blue shoelace and one yellow shoelace. I always use two different colors during the learning stages so students don't have to problem solve left and right hand. Just shorten each lace and tie them together. You then have one regular length lace but it's blue on one side and yellow on the other. I also begin with a shoe that is NOT being worn by using a tennis shoe sitting on a table.
In order to have many opportunities for practice, I look for items that require tying (jackets, sweat pants) or have cardboard cut outs of shoes in a variety of areas of the room. We go on scavenger hunts to find the shoes and then tie the laces. It gives a nice sense of accomplishment along with making tying part of a game! Hope you find these helpful!
