     severe consequences; the importance of spelling accurately; the
     value of crosstraining; folding a letter; free computer training

Thursday, 11/5/09
 1. Students received a questionnaire to complete in helping me prepare a 
    report to the state department about my vocational students.  They were
    also given a letter that explains to parents why the social security 
    numbers are needed.  Please return form by Monday...tomorrow is even 
    better!
 2. ITHC Session 5 (am)
        Students took the test for this unit.  Those wanting a retest were
        instructed to look up answers on the ones missed, and write the 
        page number next to the question prior to taking the retest.
 3. DVT Lesson 10 was reviewed aloud (pm)
 4. Anatomy Chapter 13 (pm)
     a. Viewed a video on hearing
     b. Continued reading from the text and writing the chapter outline
     c. Students were instructed to bring pillows and blankets tomorrow for
        their lesson on relaxation

Wednesday, 11/4/09

     a. Workbooks were collected and graded - due today

     c. Test was given.  Students were given 10 minutes open book time 
        once their tests were completed.
 2. ITHC Session 5 (am)
     a. Students were able to begin their testing over this assignment 
     b. Reminder - Response blog is due Friday by 2:00 pm
     c. Students had 45 minutes to work on this unit
 3. Competency Skill checklist forms were distributed to students for a 
    self-assessment, then collected.  These will be updated throughout the
    year.  A similar form may be used for your final job site evaluation 
    second semester.

     a. Plan on shadowing two weeks from today (November 18th).  IF YOU ARE
        PLANNING ON DOING CNA TRAINING NEXT SEMESTER...YOU MUST SHADOW A

        your experience.

 4. Anatomy Chapter 10 (pm)
     a. Reviewed material covered thus far.
     b. Students built a model of the brain, with a focus on the 4 lobes of 
        the cerebrum.  Each lobe was labeled with the functions of the lobe 
     c. Students watched a short PowerPoint on how we interpret information
        differently, how colors affect learning and moods, etc.
     d. Study Guide that you already have will be due Friday.


Monday, 10/12/09
 1. Terminology Chapter 8 lecture with PowerPoint was completed. (am)
 2. ITHC Session 4 assignment was distributed.  Your initial blog is due next
    Monday.  Your response blog is due Wednesday, October 19th.  You may 
    begin taking the test later this week.  (am)
 3. DVT Lesson 7 was reviewed via the video review and by interpreting terms
    from the lesson.  A reminder to students on the need to pay attention to
    detail in order to get good grades on workbook assignments was given. (pm)
 4. Anatomy Chapter 10 (pm)
     a. Be sure to be here next Monday for a special presentation
     b. A review of previous lecture notes was done
     c. Students received a handout of the prior lecture notes
     d. We continued lecturing from the chapter.  An experiment was done on
        how we are electrically charged. 
     e. A demonstration on the use of a memory technique was done.  Students
        received a handout to enable them to memorize up to 10 items.

Thursday, 10/8/09
 1. Reminder to come to the open house tonight between 6-8.  Extra credit is
    given to those who come, bring a parent, and/or help out.
 2. Terminology Chapter 8 assignments and test date have been moved to next
    Wednesday. (am)
 3. ITHC Session 3 test over chapters 7-9 was given today.  Students will 
    be able to repeat the test tomorrow if wanting to improve their score.
    These tests will all be retakable from now on...but I'll take the score 
    of the final test as your result. (am)
 4. A video was shown on testicular cancer and self-examination (am)
 5. Students worked on preparing for the Open House. (am)
 6. DVT 7 terms were reviewed together (pm)
 7. Anatomy Chapter 10 was begun with group reading and discussion.  Students
    constructed a neuron from PlayDoh. (pm)


Wednesday, 10/7/09
 1. Students planned Open House events for tomorrow and worked on making 
    floor patterns to lead to our classroom (am)
 2. Information was shared regarding the University of Indianapolis having the
    only midwife training program in Indiana.
 3. Information was shared on the Homework Hotline (1-877-ASK ROSE)
 4. Students were given 2 handouts on blogging.  One was a written list from
    yesterday's discussion on expectations of blogging entries.  The other
    was a sample blog entry from Ivy Tech (am)
 5. Students were given an additional permission slip for parents to sign for 
    those going on the trip.  It is due back with the other form.
 6. DVT Lesson 7 video was shown and the assignment sheet was distributed.  
    The test and workbook will be due next Tuesday (pm)
 7. Anatomy Chapters 10, 11, and 13 were begun.  We will cover all three 
    chapters prior to a test being given.  Today we viewed a video on the 
    Brain. (pm)

     Discussed problems with the blogging assignment...and reviewed the
     expectations.  Students have until 12:00 midnight Sunday night to 
     redo Sessions 2 and 3 blogs if they choose.  
 4. Reminded students that the HOSA Fall Leadership forms and money need to 
    be in by Friday.  Students are to add $3 to the cost (in the event we
    have to pay for a bus).  
 5. DVT Lesson 6 (pm)

     b. Test was given
 6. Announced the Open House at EEC this Thursday from 6-8 pm.  We will 
    discuss this further tomorrow.

    reviewed for tomorrow's terminology exam (am)
 2. Today begins a new grading period...a fresh start!!  Do your best!

 5. The movie "Patch Adams" was shown.  Students were asked to observe the
    ethics of Patch, the behavior of healthcare workers, and the importance  
    of treating people, not diseases. (pm)

 1. Students scheduled donors for the blood drive (am)
 2. ITHC Session 3 assignment was distributed.  Your first blog is due next
    Tuesday.  The test will follow on Thursday.  Lastly, your response blog
    is due on Friday of next week. The assignment mentions your final project
    and lists a due date...be sure to check your syllabus for the due date 
    you have been assigned.  (am)

 4. Ivy Tech notified me yesterday afternoon to say they have simplified the
    process for taking the COMPASS test (for the dual credit).  Disregard the
    instructions for applying to Ivy Tech for an ID number.  They will now
    use a portion of your Social Security number as your ID - and you do not

    pair up...and prepare a presentation for Friday.  Each pair is to 
    job role a bad interview and a good interview. (am class)
 3. Working on job placement for non-CNA students.  Those with attendance 
    problems...or who do not have a TB test...may not get placement.  This 
    would result in failing the course. (am class)

      Lesson given on identifying strengths and weaknesses...then applied 
      to job situation.  Students practiced interviewing each other.
 5. CPR class #1 was held for pm students who didn't take it in the fall.
    Those who were scheduled but absent will need to arrange and take the 
    CPR training at another facility (ie. the hospital) and turn in their
    card by the end of the six weeks...or they will get an F on that 
    assignment. (pm class)

      a. Non-CNA students who have been assigned jobs began their jobs 
         today.  Remember to have your timecard signed each day.  Those not
         assigned jobs worked independently in the classroom.
      b. CNA students had class #1-A today.  Materials were distributed and
         chapters 1 and 2 were covered.  Follow the schedule you received
         regarding material to be covered each day.
 4. We watched the new President's speech on TV (pm class)
 5. Anatomy Chapter 19 (pm class):
      a. In groups, students demonstrated the 5 functions of blood vessels
      b. Ischemia - discussed the meaning and a way to remember it
      c. In groups, students demonstrated the 5 Cool P's that are signs of
         arterial occlusion.
      d. Blood Pressure: discussed the definition; demo done to help you 
         remember systolic over diastolic; discussed results of both high 
         and low blood pressure; brachial artery is used to measure B/P;
         equipment and procedure was demonstrated, then students had the
         opportunity to practice taking blood pressures on each other.

 2. The decision was made to equal out the workload between classes by the
    following:
      a) The ITHC course will now be taught with the senior class in the
         mornings (beginning next year)
      b) The pm class students will turn in their textbooks (if returning
         next year).  I will store them until next fall.  The entire course
         will be repeated; however, the assignments will probably change.
      c) Students in the pm class will now devote Tuesdays through Fridays
         to Anatomy.  We will have more time for hands-on learning and 
         discussion/review.

    up-to-date on their their TB tests.  Forms are due back by 1/20/09.
    Physicals must be done AFTER the TB tests are given.  (am class)

    fieldtrip. 
 3. Abbreviation List #1 (pm class):
      a) Correction was made on words to be learned by students with a 
         Teacher of Record.  You are to know the following terms from the
         list: Numbers 1, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10, 11, 13, 17, and 20
      b) The PowerPoint involving these abbreviations is now listed on the
         website under "Handouts"
      c) Sentences are due for each list, on the day of the test.  You must
         write a sentence for each individual abbreviation.  The sentence 
         should indicate your knowledge and understanding of the term.
         Each sentence is to list both the abbreviation and the meaning.
         For example: Sally had pain in her abdomen (abd) due to her 
         ruptured appendix. (the term "abdomen" should be underlined)
 4. Anatomy chapter 18 (pm class):
      a) Study Guide was due today
      b) Test was given
 5. Anatomy chapter 19 (pm class):
      a) Study Guide was distributed and students were told which sections
         could be omitted (see someone's paper if you were absent).  Due

         given next Monday (if CPR is cancelled) or the next Monday (if we
         are not out for the holiday)

      c) You will be writing sentences on each abbreviation - due the day of
         the test.  I'll explain how to do them later this week.
      d) Students who have a teacher of record are only required to learn 
         the terms that are circled; however, you may challenge yourself to
         do them all if you wish.

 1. Due today: Job Shadow report from those who job shadowed last Wednesday.
    (am class)
 2. HOSA Membership contest: The morning and afternoon classes will be 
    competing to see who can get the most members to join over the next 2
    weeks.  The class with the highest percentage will receive a reward.
    Dues are $15 and are due by 12/17.  Checks should be made out to ACS or
    Ebbertt Education Center.
 3. HOSA Poster Competition: Students may enter one or more posters in this
    contest.  Posters should be based on a candy theme (ie. Milky Way), and
    the topic is on joining HOSA.  Deadline is Monday.  The winner will 
    receive candy that is represented on his or her poster.
 4. Volunteer Opportunity (am class):
    December 17th is a "Volunteer" day during the morning class.  No more 
    than 5 students may go to one site.  Students were given a worksheet and
    a permission slip.  Once arrangements have been made, submit the  
    worksheet (completed) to Mrs. Perry.  Permission slips are due back by
    next Wednesday.
 5. Competency Skill List: Students were given a form to complete and turn 
    in today.  Put your name on the form, assess yourself in each category,
    then turn in the form.  It will be updated throughout the year.  A
    final form will go in your portfolios. 
 6. Extended Labs (am class):
    These will begin January 20th.  Students will be on the job Monday 
    through Thursday (see calendar for dates throughout the semester).  
    If you miss class on Friday, you must come here instead of the job on
    the following Monday.  
    Those NOT doing CNA training must get me information by next Wednesday
    as to what type of job they want to work, along with any choice of
    facility or contact person you may know.
    Those doing CNA training: Students received a handout on expectations
    for doing the training.  We discussed all items, then students signed
    the form.  A parent signature must be obtained prior to turning in the
    form, which is due next Wednesday.  
 7. HOSA (am class):
      a) We are planning a fieldtrip to see the Bodies exhibit at Circle
         Center mall December 18th.  $15 is due by December 12th.  Permission
         slips will be distributed later this week.  
      b) Christmas Caring: Please donate new or gently used clothing, toys, 
         or food (new and nonperishable) items.  A flyer will be made and
         posted by the officers.
      c) Ornaments for the Christmas tree: Please make a health-themed 
         ornament for our tree.
      d) Door decoration: Please make a paper ornament for our door.

 1. It's the start of a new grading period!!  I am a little behind on this
    website...so will just start fresh today and not worry about what was 
    missed.  Beginning this grading period, I'll post grades for tests, etc
    on the website also.  See me if you forget your code.  I'll be working on
    grades tonight...so tests taken today won't be graded until tomorrow.
 2. All make-up work was completed (or a grade of zero was given).  The only
    exception was any LOA occurring during the 2nd grading period.
 3. Distributed Competency #3 (the last one!)  Due 12/15 (am class)
 4. Terminology chapter 12 (am class):
     a) students worked on CDs and workbooks
     b) due to my laryngitis, I am not lecturing over this unit

    you are to wear scrubs or business dress clothes on Fridays.  Hair is to 
    be neat; shoes are to be clean; no pants dragging the floor.  Let's get
    prepared for the real world!  It is mandatory...not for extra credit.

 1. Pizza parties were postponed until Thursday by the blood center.
 2. Breast Cancer Awareness project (am class):
     a) Students researched some web sites, then brainstormed some ideas for
        educating others about breast cancer and helping organizations
        financially.
     b) After voting, the following was planned for this week:
         1. Hold a bake sale on Friday with all proceeds going as a donation
            to the Comfort Shop at Community Hospital to be used for women 
            who have undergone a mastectomy and cannot afford to purchase
            items from the shop.  All students are asked to bring in baked
            goods on Friday.  Whitney Walker will check on zip-lock baggies.
         2. Helium balloons with facts about breast cancer will be used to
            decorate our selling area.  At the end of the sale, we will give
            away the balloons.
         3. We will make pink ribbons to sell at the bake sale as well.
         4. Baked goods will sell for 50 cents and ribbons will sell for a 
            quarter.  Permission was obtained from Mr. Holbert.
 3. Job Shadow Assignments for Wednesday (am class):
     a) Non-HHS students will be job shadowing if their permission slips are
        signed and returned to me PRIOR to going.
     b) Those going to Community Hospital were given a packet that needs 
        read, then signed by both the student and the parent.  Completed 
        forms are to be taken to the hospital's Human Resource department at
        0750 in the morning.
     c) Due on Thursday: timecard, job shadow evaluation

        provider/worker.

 2. Discussed scrubs for the afternoon class.  You may wear them on 
    Wednesdays for extra credit.  The pants must be kakhi, navy blue, or
    black.  The tops must coordinate with the pants.  If you have a print
    top on, you must be able to fit into school dress code within 30 seconds
    without going to a private area to change.  For example, have a solid 
    color polo or turtle neck underneath.  Shoes must be solid color, and it 
    is best if they are white.  They should coordinate with the pants also.
    Hair must be held in place or back so as not to fall forward when 
    bending over.  Clothing is not to be wrinkled.  Shoes must be clean.
    Nail polish cannot be chipped.  Necklaces must be worn inside your tops.
    Maximum of two rings can be worn.  (pm class)
 3. Work Ethics (am class):
     a) Cooperation and Respect were discussed and activities performed.  
     b) Those who were absent must do the following and turn in within 2 
        days:
         1) Complete and turn in the "Gender Communication quiz"

    me information (written down) by next Wednesday as to what you want to 
    do that day and where you'd prefer to go.  If you are planning on doing

    Quick review of the terms.  Announced that beginning with this lesson,
    the workbooks will now be worth 50 points each week.  However, I expect

    numbers 33-50 have mail slots to the RIGHT of your number.  Empty your
    mailbox EVERYDAY.  Do NOT use it to store your papers and books.
 2. Open House - We did it!!!  Our turnout was the greatest in the school,
    and Mr. Holbert congratulated us on a well-run event.  Mr. Holbert will
    provide our classes with a pizza party on MONDAY.  Be there or be 
    hungry!

    Distributed an updated copy of the study guide.  Those absent will need

    We had 2 speakers from the Lookworthy facility on 53rd street, Monica and
    Jenny, come and speak to us about skin damage and repair.  They brought
    equipment that allowed each student to view their skin and assess any
    damage present.

    (40 points) were discussed.  It runs 6-8 this Thursday.  Those helping 
    early need to arrive between 5:15 and 5:30 pm.  Those working need to 
    wear scrubs.

 1. Emphasis was placed on make-up work today due to mid-term.
 2. Terminology chapter 3 (am class):
     Students worked independently on their workbooks and/or CDs 
 3. Second TB test was given to CNA students and to those who missed the
    initial testing.  Be sure to be here Monday for the test to be read.

 4. Gloving and Handwashing (am class):
    Several students were checked on gloving.  All students should be ready
    for check-off on both skills.
 5. Introduction to Health Care (pm class):
     a) GREAT NEWS!!!  Permission has been obtained from Ivy Tech for your
        tests to be "Open Book".  Due to this change, however, the classroom
        sessions on Wednesdays and Fridays will now differ.  I will no 
        longer be lecturing on everything covered on the tests.  I expect 
        you to read each chapter prior to the test...on your own!!  In class,
        I will have activities or supplemental material that highlights 
        information on topics covered in each chapter.
     b) Students retook tests #1 and #2 with their books.  Those absent will
        need to arrange a make-up time due to the extent of time the testing
        takes.
 6. DVT Lesson 1 (pm class):

    class.

     a) Played a game on guessing the origin of various diseases
     b) Reviewed the chapter with a concept map on the board
     c) Divided students into groups to research and share answers to 
        questions from the chapter.
 7. Announced we will have a guest speaker tomorrow from Community Hospital 
    on the topic of volunteering.  Have your questions ready. (pm class)

    Pacers.
 2. Oncology PowerPoints (am class):
    Students worked on their projects for about an hour and a half, then
    presented to the class.  Those not yet having the opportunity to present 
    will do so on Tuesday. 
 3. Students were shown how to access flashcards for tests at the following
    website (am class):
       flashcardexchange.com 
    Use the tag "perrymedterm" to search for the cards.  If that doesn't 
    work, search for "Med Term chapter 2".  See me if you have problems.
 4. Intro to Health Care - chapter 2 (pm class):
     a) Finished lecturing over the chapter after distributing and 
        discussing tests from chapter 1
     b) Conducted review activities

 1. Terminology chapter 2 (am class):
     a) Students practiced labeling the body cavities and the parts of a cell
     b) Completed the lecture and PowerPoint slides
     c) Played a Jeopardy Review game in teams (did very well!!!)
     d) Students worked on their assessment test in the student CD
     e) Distributed the first Competency (due 9/29).  Some of the information
        can be obtained here at EEC; however, the nursing and medical 
        resources will most likely have to be obtained from Ivy Tech.  You
        might plan on doing that when you go there for testing.
 2. Reminder that you will have about 1 hour to work on PowerPoints tomorrow
    prior to presentations. (am class)
 3. A&P Chapter 5 (pm class):
     a) Viewed a video on Universal Precautions, then took a quiz with notes
     b) Demonstrated how easily germs pass from person to person (using a
        glow-in-the-dark powder)
     c) Demonstrated proper handwashing.  Students are to practice at home
     d) Checked on a few students' handwashing skills (with a special 
        product and a black light!)  Who's in the "dirty girl" club??
     e) Showed a video on a career in the Central Supply area of a hospital
     f) Distributed a study guide from the text.  It is due on the day of 
        the test.


Wednesday, August 27, 2008

 1. Shared information about the "Indiana Next" magazine geared toward 
    juniors and seniors who are planning on going to college.  A copy of
    each magazine will be kept available in the main room, and the checklists
    will be posted on the white board.
 2. Bill of Rights (am class):
     In groups, students discussed patient rights.  We then shared and 
     discussed the rights of both hospital and nursing home patients.
 3. Scrubs and Professional dress (am class):
     In groups, students chose colors and ideas for class uniforms.  They
     must go along with the school dress code, and we searched for ways to
     make the two coincide.  Mrs. Perry will get some clarification from
     Ms. Lowe.  Once agreement has been established, students may wear them
     on Wednesdays for extra credit, until they are mandatory the 3rd grading
     period.
 4. HOSA Introduction:
    HOSA was introduced through a PowerPoint of last year's convention.  We
    then shared information about the dues ($15) needing paid this grading
    period and the upcoming event in November involving the Indiana Pacers.
    Copies of the flyer will be available to students tomorrow.
 5. Work Ethics (am class):
     a) Appearance: Students completed 3 handouts for self-evaluation, then
        we discussed the importance of proper appearance and behavior as a
        health care worker.
     b) Teamwork: This was postponed until next Wednesday.
 6. Review of the Anatomy chapter 1 test was done (pm class)
 7. Test over Intro to Health Care chapter 1 was given, then discussed.
    We then began chapter 2.  Discussion of important information took 
    place through page 45.  (pm class)

 1. Human Body/Diseases - Oncology (am class)
     Students were divided into groups of 2-3 and were assigned a topic
     on cancer to research and make a PowerPoint presentation on.  The
     presentation must include prevention measures, screenings, symptoms,
     treatment, and prognosis.  One group is covering the role of 
     nutrition in preventing cancer...and several snacks were provided
     that demonstrated healthy eating.  
 2. A&P chapter 1 study guide due today. (pm class)
 3. A&P chapter 1 test was given. (pm class)
 4. A&P chapter 5 (pm class):
     a) Viewed video on dust mites in our environment
     b) Distributed a study guide for the test on 9/4
     c) Distributed copies of PowerPoint slides, then lectured on them

 2. TB tests were read.  Those absent will need to have their test repeated.
 3. Terminology chapter 1 test was given (am class)
 4. Terminology chapter 2 (am class):
     a) Distributed study guide for the test
     b) Students took a pre-test
     c) Workbook due 9/4
     d) Test is on 9/4
     e) Assessment from student CD is due by 9/4
     f) Began lecture with PowerPoint slides.  Activities were done along
        the way, and we ended with a class review of word parts.
     g) Students were reminded to bring their text flashcards to class every
        Monday and Thursday.
 5. Due today: Terminology workbook, chapter 1 (am class)
 6. DVT video #1 was viewed in class, followed by distribution of the 
    workbooks.  You are to complete all written exercises for Lesson 1 and 
    turn in on the day of the test, which is in 2 weeks. (pm class)

 1. TB shots were given.  Be sure to be here Monday to have them read.
 2. Distributed "Star Student" card to each student.  For each A on a test, 
    you get one star punched.  For a 100%, you get 2 stars punched.  Have it
    with you each day, because I won't do make-up punches.  Once your card is
    completed, you get a free snack and drink at Munchies and More.
 3. Disease Process (am class):
     a) Distributed handout on 10 things to do to stay healthy.
     b) Viewed video on Universal Precautions, then took a quiz with notes.
        Explained that clean-up of blood instructions, along with gloves and
        gauze, are hanging on white board in middle room.
     c) Distributed procedure on removing gloves.  Practiced together.  You
        are to practice until you are ready to be checked off, then provide
        the checklist to me for testing.
     d) Distributed procedure on handwashing.  Simulated it together.  You 
        are to practice until you are ready to be checked off, then provide
        the checklist to me for testing.
     e) Distributed and discussed handout on sterile packages.  Remember, 
        it is no longer sterile if wet, torn, or contaminated.
     f) Took quiz on the Chain of Infection.
 4. Introduction to Health Care (pm class)
     a) Discussed study guide answers for the test.
     b) Conducted activity in teams, naming different professionals and
        what they do.
 5. Quickly reviewed anatomy terms for the upcoming test next week (pm class)

     b) Participated in many practice activities
     c) Demonstrated use of student CD.  Beginning next chapter, you must 
        submit a copy of your scores on the assessment mode for the various 
        practice exercises.  These will be due on the day of testing for 
        each unit.  You may retake the assessment test until you reach a 
        high score if necessary.  
     d) Students had about 40 minutes to work on workbooks or student CDs.
 4. A&P chapter 1 (pm class)
     a) Reminder: test next Tuesday.
     b) Discussed PowerPoint slides with accompanying handout. 
     c) Students had about 1 hour to work on study guides (one is due next
        Tuesday) or make flashcards on information from the test study guide

    One handout was a calendar of all the chapter assignments and test dates.
 5. Read a letter from a previous student on how to succeed in this class.
