Middle School Math and Science

Students in seventh grade math have more opportunities to use
algebraic terminology to express relationships. They will compute
perimeter, area, and volume of common geometric objects and use the results
to find measure of less regular objects. Students solve problems involving
rational numbers. Students should understand and use scientific notation
and square roots. They should be flexible in the use of fractions,
decimals, and percents when solving problems.
By the end of eighth grade, all students should have completed pre-
algebra (those in Step Ahead Math will also have completed Algebra I and
possibly Geometry). Students of pre-algebra use properties to compute
rational numbers in a variety of forms. They should understand the use of
exponents, powers, and roots. They should solve simple linear equations and
inequalities. While graphing functions, they will use the concept of rate
and slope. Understanding of plane and solid geometric shapes will be
deepened and used to solve problems. Students will compute perimeter, area,
and volume of geometric objects and investigate how these measures are
affected by changes in scale. Students will create and use data sets to
determine probabilities and make predictions.
Beginning the 2007-2008 school year, a new class will be added to our
mathematics curriculum for all middle school students. “Math Lab” will meet
on a daily basis for 30 minutes in addition to regular math class time.
During math lab, all students will:
•	participate in meaningful math activities using appropriate tools to
ensure the development of number sense, reasoning, and problem solving
•	utilize “hands-on” along with “minds-on” activities
•	speak the language of mathematics.
•	participate in algebraic and geometric thinking activities to ready
students for higher level mathematics
•	participate in activities where students are individually
accountable as well as activities where they cooperatively work on math
encounters
•	participate in tasks that meet the needs of each student
•	participate in mathematical journal writing activities

Other activities that students in Middle School participate in are:
*Math Bowl Competition
*Math Counts Competition
*Math League Competition
*St. Jude Math-A-Thon
*Pi Day (3.14 - March 14th)
*Math Awareness Month – Calendar of Activities

Welcome to seventh and eighth grade science. The science curriculum in
seventh and eighth grade rotates using a two-year cycle. By the end of
eighth grade, students will have had opportunities to use and sharpen their
inquiry skills. The three branches of science that will be studied are
earth and space science, physical science, which includes chemistry, and
life science. Students will have opportunities to think like a scientist by
observing, inferring, predicting, classifying, making models, communicating,
and measuring. Students will construct and carry out scientific
investigations throughout the year.

During the 2009-2010 school year, students will study:
•	Weather and Climate
•	Chemical Building Blocks
•	Chemical Interactions
•	Motion, Forces, and Energy
•	Astronomy

During the 2010-2011 school year, students will study:
•	From Bacteria to Plants
•	Animals
•	Human Biology and Health
•	Earth’s Changing Surface
•	Earth’s Waters
