Students in Junior Kindergarten through Middle School participate in art class 1-2 times a week. All grades focus on the elements and principles of art through demonstrations, visuals, and hands-on projects. A variety of media is used to expose students to all the many different aspects of making art. Artists and art movements are introduced to broaden knowledge and appreciation, and in turn inspire individual and unique artwork from the students. |
The art department works with the classroom curriculum by designing projects to accompany other subject areas such as science and social studies. Countries, cultures, and times in history are integrated as part of an interdisciplinary approach. Examples of such units include Native Americans, China, Africa, Egypt, Medieval times, Space, Insects, The 1960's, Renaissance, and Japan. Concepts in the primary grades include shapes, color, patterns, story units, and development of gross and fine motor skills. |

Themes found in the curriculum are customized with each years events. The students participate in a school show in the fall and an even bigger spring show called "The Celebration of Fine Arts". Both feature art and musical performances by all the classes meant to develop a sense of pride in their ability, and an appreciation for all the arts. Past themes for these shows have included seasons, musical genres, fairytales, animals, Broadway and Hollywood, and celebrations of cultures. |
