What is the procedure for having my child leave school with a friend?
You must send me a note or call me to let me know if someone other than a parent is picking up your child. Some parents even tell me what color and type of car "Aunt Jane" is driving. I do like details.Back to Top
Can I send treats for the class on my child's birthday?
Yes. Guidelines are in the parent handbook. Our carpet does not like chocolate cake but almost anything else that you and your child choose is met with great enthusiasm.Back to Top
What about snacks during the school day?
In first grade we do set aside a time for a snack right before morning recess. It is your responsibility to provide a healthy one for your child's mid-morning pick-me-up. Low sugar snacks are best. Ditto, drinks.Back to Top
When are you going to start art for animals?
Usually in January we start the actual process of creating masterpieces using tempera paint. The promotion and sales of framed art, note cards, and posters usually starts in March. Every year we have made over $1000 for the Humane Society of NW Indiana. They are so grateful to our first graders.Back to Top
What is Thematic Instruction. I see that it is on your schedule.
Thematic Instruction is engaging in learning activities that fall in the social studies or science domain but involve some reading, writing, and even perhaps mathematics. Some of our themes this year are titled Writing a Constitution, Generations, Building a Neighborhood, Research on a wild animal in our area, and our first grade service project Art for Animals. Most if not all incorporate the areas of Civics, History, Geography, and Economics.Back to Top
