Charles Demuth This painting was done in 1928 by Charles Demuth. He was an American modernist that focused on urban and industrial settings and used cubist geometry to produce clean linear results. "I Saw the Figure 5 in Gold" is based on a poem by his friend William Carlos Williams, about a fire engine racing to answer an alarm in the city. The number 5 was on the fire truck and it's three sizes were meant to show movement. The painting was chosen for it's theme and it details of the number 5 which made it significant to pay tribute to this day.

Elements of Art, Line and Value The first step to recreate this picture started with the background which was done by using only straight lines. It was colored by using values of gray, black, blue and purple to feel like a dark city. |
