The students, staff, and parents at Forest Ridge Academy play an active role
in supporting and encouraging the values of citizenship, service and
responsibility. As part of our community service project, Ms. Panos and I,
and the middle school students will lead FRA in the St. Jude /Math-A-Thon
this fall.
Math-A-thon is a supplemental math education program for grades K-9 that
also serves as a fund-raiser for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
More than 25,000 schools and thousands of students participate to raise
millions of dollars each year for the patients at St. Jude making it
America's largest education-based fund-raiser. All grade levels at FRA
will be encouraged to participate.
Math-A-Thon Information:
An assembly will be held during which students will watch a video explaining
the Math-A-Thon and St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. Students will
receive sponsor forms, permission slips, and more information following the
assembly. After gathering sponsorships, each student will complete the Math-
A-Thon Funbook by solving a variety of math problems including hidden
messages, puzzles and pure arithmetic operations. Students will collect
the donations from their sponsors and return them to their coordinator.
Students and schools can earn exciting prizes based upon the amount of
donations they raise. While St. Jude offers prizes to all participants and
their schools based upon the amount of money they raise, the benefits of
participating in the Math-A-Thon are far greater. Not only will children
sharpen their basic math skills, they will also help St. Jude fight diseases
around the world.
More About St. Jude:
St. Jude Children's Research Hospital was founded in 1962 by the late
entertainer Danny Thomas and is based in Memphis, Tennessee. St. Jude is
internationally recognized for its pioneering work in finding cures and
saving children with cancer and other catastophic diseases. St. Jude has
treated patients from all 50 states and from 80 countries around the world.
The treatments they give their patients were mainly developed at St. Jude in
their research labs. These labs are open 24 hours a day, 365 days per year
so that they can find new treatments. Each time they develop a new
treatment, they freely share their discoveries with scientific and medical
communities around the world. Since its inception, St. Jude has developed
protocals that have brought survival rates for childhood cancers from less
than 20 percent to more than 70 percent overall. This is why everyone’s
help is so important.
Participation in the Math-A-Thon fund-raising program makes it possible for
St. Jude to treat patients regardless of a family's ability to pay. St.
Jude is the only pediatric cancer research center where families never pay
for treatments that are not covered by insurance, and families without
insurance are never asked to pay.

A Final Note:
The Math-A-Thon program is an entertaining and educational way for students
to review their standard math skills, exercise problem solving skills, and
improve their critical thinking processes while learning about social
awareness and volunteerism. We are very excited about participating in the
St. Jude Math-A-Thon. Our goal is to get 100% participation from our
students at FRA. Also, it is our wish to be able to participate in this
charity on a yearly basis. With a lot of hard work and dedication, we're
sure to meet our goal! Thank you in advance for your participation,
cooperation, and donations!
