Homework

Dear Parents,

Every Monday, I will send home a sheet listing what your child will be working on throughout the week.  I strongly recommend that you make flashcards of your child’s letters or words and keep them in the green folder I’m sending home so they won’t get lost.  Please review these letters or words with your child regularly throughout the year.

Every Friday, your child will be assessed on letter identification, letter sounds, or sight words that he/she has been working on throughout the week.  Students in J.K. will complete a 3-step process using their “Letter and Word Folder” this year, which includes the following:

1.       Recognize all letters of the alphabet, both uppercase and lowercase

2.     Be able to make the sound of each letter of the alphabet

3.     Learn basic sight words and take spelling tests. Spelling tests will be given on Fridays.

I have assessed each child to determine the perfect place to get started!  Some students are working on letter identification, while others may be working on sight words.  Please remember that your child will work at his/her own pace.  Your child is perfectly fine where he/she is and will be progressing each week!  My goal is to maintain each child’s joy and fascination of learning.

Ø      To make it fun, here are some ideas for you and your child:

o       If your child is working on identifying letters or sight words, go on a hunt around your house to find those letters/words (food labels, magazines, books, mail).  Encourage your child to practice writing each letter or word.  Write letters/words in shaving cream, pudding, gel pens, or think of your own creative way!

o       If your child is working on letter sounds, think of words that begin with each sound.  Look through magazines and/or books to find pictures of things that begin with each letter sound.  Make up a fun song featuring the sounds your child is working on each week!
