Parent tips: 1. Accept the idea that sustained concentration is difficult for the child and recognize your own frustration threshold when working with them. 2. Encourage physical activity to provide an outlet for extra energy. 3. Stress the stop, think and act approach when reacting to situations. 4. Provide a great deal of encouragement and support. A.D.D. children need to sense compassion. 5. Help the child to focus in on strengths so as to bolster self-esteem. Involve them in activities where they will excel. 6. Hold the child accountable for his/her behavior and the decisions they choose to make. Help them realize they are making choices. 7. Use charts, graphs, lists, etc. to help structure situations and to provide feedback. 8. Try and maintain consistent schedules (homework, chores, T.V., dinner, etc.) as changes in routine are particularly hard to adjust to for A.D.D. chilren. 9. Break work situations into short time periods to encourage work completion. 10. When doing independent work tasks, such as homework, provide a quiet, non-distracting area in which to work.
