Treasured Readers

Treasured Readers are students who sign up to read to our class. Each day during D.E.A.R. (Drop Everything And Read) time our class gathers in our family room. Our Treasured Reader sits on the couch and reads a story aloud to us. The student chooses the book on their own. It may be one from home, the library, or our classroom. These books and times are not assigned. This is a volunteer opportunity. The student needs to be able to complete the story during our 15 minutes of D.E.A.R. . This is a very exciting time for the children. They look forward to the day they get to read to the class. I have a display in the front of the classroom that designates which day of the week they will be reading. Once they have read a story to us, I document the story and date on an individual tag. These tags hang on our Treasured Reader display all year. The children may read as many times during the year as they want. It is amazing how the speaking skills, such as phrasing, pitch, tone, and presentation, are enhanced through this simple opportunity.

Use these files to set up your reminder board. This helps your Treasured Readers remember which day they are reading. It also prevents the readers from forgetting their books. I allow the children to pick their own sea creature for the year. I laminate them after writing their names on each one and add a magnet to the back.

Use these files to create your Treasured Reader bulletin board. I record the readers name, date, book title and author on each book tag. I put each reader's name on a name plate and place it in our Treasured Reader ocean. When a child reads to the class, I fill out a book tag and put it with their name plate.

During our class awards day at the end of the year, I take the book tags for each child and put them in the Treasured Reader Treasure Chest. (coming soon)
