Mr. Hawkins teaches the Advanced Band and Jazz Combo after school. In addition, he is the
instrumental music specialist at Clay Middle School, South Bend.
Mrs. Martha Bradberry is the string specialist at St. Joseph Grade School, where she teaches several
levels of string classes, beginning with the third grade. When she is not teaching string classes, Mrs.
Bradberry is a local professional musician and plays in a number of different groups, including both
classical music groups and folk dance bands.
Our general music program is based on the work of two twentieth-century German composers: Carl
Orff and Gunild Keetman. Orff and Keetman felt that children should explore music the way a
composer does. For this reason, our students learn to sing; play barred instruments (xylophones,
metallophones, glockenspiels); play recorders; use movement to explore music; read, write,
improvise and compose music.
Primary grades (k, 1, 2) will have an opportunity to share their music with their parents at an Open
House night in the fall. At this event, parents will participate in a family music class and experience
the Orff instruction first-hand. Intermediate grades (3, 4, 5) will present a musical based on a
children's book in the spring. At this event, they will sing, play instruments, and recite a story that
uses their own music to illustrate the theme. Junior high grades will play for mass at various times
throughout the year in addition to "publishing" their music on the website and/or on a CD.
