Investivating Indiana History

What Do We Do?

Your job for "Investigating Indiana" is to independently research given 
topics in Indian's history and collect a photo from each important point in 
history.  Then, as a group you will create a poster depicting the topics in 
order of rank from the most important to the least important.  You will be 
ranking the following events or topics:

   Studebaker car is in production.
   Indiana railroads are "booming."
   Harriet Tubman is a conductor on the Underground Railroad.
   The Underground Railroad is used in Indiana.
   Mississippian People arrive in Indiana.
   Miami People arrive in Indiana.
   The Battle of Corydon.
   The Battle of Tippecanoe.

Investigating is a job for a fourth grade student, and you are going to be 
awesome.  There are four of you in the group that are going to work 
independently and cooperatively.  



Indiana Standards Covered:
Social Studies:
4.1.2  Identify and describe historic Indian groups that lived in the region 
that became Indiana at the time of early European exploration and settlement 
in the seventeenth century.

4.1.3  Explain the importance of the Revolutionary War and other key events 
and people that influenced Indiana's development.

4.1.5  Describe the removal of Indian groups from Indiana in the 1830's.

4.1.7  Explain the roles of various individuals, groups, and movements in 
the social conflicts leading to the Civil War.

4.1.8  Summarize the participation of Indiana citizens in the Civil War.

4.1.13  Organize and interpret timelines that show relationships among 
people, events, and movements in the history of Indiana.

4.1.15  Using primary source and secondary source materials, generate a 
question, seek answers, and write brief comments about an event in Indiana 
history.


Language Arts Standards:
4.7.1  Ask thoughtful and respond orally to relevant questions with 
appropriate elaboration.

4.7.2  Summarize major ideas and supporting evidence presented in spoken 
presentations.

4.7.5  Present effective introductions and conclusions that guide and inform 
the listener's understanding of important ideas and details.

4.7.7  Emphasize points in ways that help the listener or viewer to follow 
important ideas and concepts.

4.7.12  Make informational presentation that:
             *focus on one main topic.
             *include facts and detail that help listeners to focus.

4.7.13  Deliver oral summaries of articles and books that contain the main 
ideas of the event or article and the most significant details.
