VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

Our school couldn’t offer our students all of the opportunities and attention
they receive without the generous help of our volunteers. We are looking for
additional help with the following:

Prep work for Spaghetti Dinner—Help wrap utensils for our dinner. Supplies are
on hand at either campus—just check in at the school office!

Study Tables Help—Tutor students with direction from their teachers, or assist
with supervision of the children of tutors.

Classroom help– Many teachers could use extra help in a classroom, or tearing
out workbook pages, etc.

SCRIP Sales – Help is needed selling SCRIP cards after all Masses at St. Joan
of Arc.

If you are interested in helping in any of these areas, please contact
Therese Bath, Director of Development, at 865-9960.

GRAND PERSONS DAY

A Whole New Way!
Grand Persons Day will be Oct. 13 for students at the St. Joan of Arc Campus.
New this year—students at the St. Patrick Campus will have a separate Grand
Persons Celebration on April 24. Having two dates will allow our special
guests to enjoy more time with students at school, and less time driving
across Kokomo! It also will eliminate conflicts for families with students at
both campuses.

The celebration on Oct. 13 will begin with an all-school Mass at SJA.
Following Mass, Grand Persons may spend time in the classroom with students to
learn more about their life at school. Students and their guests will have
opportunities to have pictures taken. Grand Persons are invited to have lunch
at school, or to take their special student out to lunch. Students only will
resume regular school activities following lunch.

Look for more information to come home with students soon!

Mmmmm…	SPAGHETTI!

The annual STSJP Spaghetti Dinner is Oct. 11! Make sure your family is on hand
to enjoy a delicious dinner and live entertainment provided by our students.

The dinner will be from 4 to 7:30 p.m. in the St. Patrick Parish Hall. Free
will offerings will be accepted.

We will need desserts for the dinner. Cookies, cakes, pies, bars—whatever is
your specialty! - may be dropped off Friday at the SP campus, or Saturday
afternoon. Thank you!

Parent-Teacher Conferences Oct. 22 & 23

The school year is flying by, and staff is already working to schedule
Parent-Teacher conferences. Conferences are a great way to stay in touch with
your child’s teacher! Please complete the time preference sheet that came home
with your child, and return it by Sept. 24.
Remember, due to the number of preschool and pre-kindergarten students, the
conference schedule for Mrs. Burke and Mrs. Foye is slightly different than
for other teachers. We look forward to seeing ALL parents during conference days!

CATHOLIC FAMILY INITIATIVE
It’s not too late!

Students Collaborate in Snow Plow Contest

Preschool, pre-kindergarten, seventh and eighth graders teamed up to create
two entries for the City of Kokomo’s Third Annual Snow Plow Painting Contest.
The entries will be judged by Mayor Greg Goodnight. Awards will be presented
to participating schools and groups on Friday, Sept. 26 at the Oktoberfest
celebration downtown.

The snow plow contest was created by the City of Kokomo to recognize the
talent of youth in the community while creating interest in the winter snow
plow months. The plows painted are used to clear city streets of snow.

Local paint stores provide the paint used, and each entry is based on the
theme, “Our Kokomo Parks”. At STSJP, the 8th grade helped preschoolers paint a
plow featuring the children’s footprints and flowers with the phrase, “Take a
walk in out parks”. The 7th graders helps pre-kindergarten students paint a
scene of trees in spring, summer, fall and winter, with pre-kindergarten
handprints creating the leaves and snow. Their plow reads, “Parks for all
seasons”.

Preschool and pre-kindergarten students enjoyed visiting the “big kid”
campus, and working with their older buddies on Sept. 9 and 10.

STOMPING OUT BULLYING

Mr. Kanable and Ms. Werling, along with Ms. Ruth Kozienski and Mrs.Veronica
Gibbs, are working to “bully-proof” STSJP. Through a series of classroom
visits and follow-up activities, the team wants to make sure all students
understand that BULLYING IS NOT TOLERATED AT STSJP!

In September, Mr. Kanable and Ms. Kozienski visited all third through eighth
grade classrooms and discussed several topics:
·	What is a bully?
·	Why do people bully?
·	During a bullying event, who are you – the bully, the victim or a bystander?
·	What can you do to stomp out bullying?
·	Students have the power to end bullying. Teachers can and will help, but
students have the power to unite and say, “We won’t tolerate bullying.”

Follow-up visits are scheduled for classrooms in October and December and will
continue during the second semester, including some grade levels at the St.
Patrick campus.

It is crucial that children feel comfortable talking to their parents about
these topics. To facilitate discussions, question and answer guides will come
home with students following the classroom visits. Parents always are
encouraged to talk with the teacher when a problem arises.
