12/16/09--Students are to turn in three pieces regarding the homeless essay. #1 Students will turn in final typed double spaced copy of 1-31 with bibliography, #2, students will turn in notes they took on homeless through our book and internet research, #3, students will turn in rough draft of homeless essay. Finally, we will complet power point presentations on classic tomorrow. Keep up your strong effort. Ms. K 12/15/09--Students will be presenting powerpoints in class wednesday and Thursday of this week. In addition, students need to turn in final copy of homeless as well as rough draft and bibiliography on Thursday 12/17/09 12/11/09--Students were given formal rubric on "Is homeless a choice or a circumstance?" WEe have been discussing and brainstorming for the past two weeks. Therefore, students should be reseraching non profit agenncies and government sites given in the rubric and take notes in reading journal. Students will be using these notes taken over the weekend to begin writng their rough drafts in class on Monday 12/14/09. The rough draft will be due on Tuesday, 12/15/09 with an editing session. The final copy is due on Thrusday 12/17/09. wednesday and Thursday we will be presenting powerpoint presentations. Keep up your strong effort. You can finish the race, one step at a time. Have a great weekend. 12/10/09--Students should continue to work on revised essay that are due on Monday 12/14/09 and work on speaker's notes for power point presentation. 12/09/09--Students are to be completing speaker's notes for powerpoint presentation. Powerpoint presentations will begin tomorrow Thursday, 12/10/09 and contiue on Friday of this week. Order of presentations was random pull-out-of hat. 12/7/09--5th hour students are to revise the following essay: Eleanor Roosevelt essay (5 paragraphs--already written), legend of sleepy hollow quis to 4 paragraphs. The fourth paragraph of leg of sleepy hollow is to incorporate Washington Irving and how his story lives on today. 3)Edgar Allen Poe essay, 4) Mark Twain quiz--revise (narration piece) and the extra credit option is revise, type double space imagingation squared.--this is due on 12/14/09 12/7/09--6th hour students are to revise the Legend of the Sleepy Holow with the fourth paragraph incorporates Washington Irving and how he lives on today. 2)Revise, type, double-space justify the ERoosevelt essay test(5 para already written) 3)mark Twain quiz to be revisded--this is a narrative piece, 4)tell-Tale Heart/Edgar Allen Poe, 5th--extra credit option write on something of your choice. this is due 12/14/09 12/7/09--7th hour students are to revise Eleanor Roosevelt Essay test a persuasive piece, Mark Twain quiz a narrative piece--4 paragraphs, Sleepy Holow--4 paragraphs including incorporating Washington Irving living on today, Edgar Allan Poe/Tell-Tale Heart--3-5 Paragraphs. The extra credit option is composing "Boots" at the computer...this is due 12/14/09 11/30/09--Students are to revise "If I were mayor, I would.." essay. This is a 250-word essay. Students are to use the persuasive ideas written in their reading journals to aid in the revision of this essay. The revised copy is due tomorrow. Students may want to type this essay. The final double-space typed justified copy is due Thursday 12/3/09. However, students may turn in the final copy on Wednesday 12/02/09 for extra credit. The final copy is a test grade. 11/24/09--Students have an extra credit opportunity for this holiday. Students are to relfect on Monsignor Charles' homily--shadow/sun, grateful. Therefore, as you celebrate Thanksgiving with your family and friends, incorporate Monsignor's homily with your newly-made memories. This is due on Monday, November 30, 2009. 11/22/09-Studentsw will write a 1-3-1 essay on Eleanor Roosevelt. Taking the information,notes, video, how did her flaws and attributes, the people, and events mold her to become the first lady of the world? 11/16/09--All students are to define and find parts of speech for the following words: mayor, government, leader, collaborate, cooperative, law. (18 points) Students are then to answer: What attributes (2 or 3) are needed for the above words. (12 points) 3) In one paragraph write what values/virtues would be needed to be an effective leader and why? (30 points) 11/13/09--ALL STUDENTS, please check online grades and any missing assignments. I need all missing assignments no later than Tuesday 11/17/09. If you have a question, then I will see you before or after school Monday. Thank you. MID TERMS are now 11/15/09--Students are invited to attend the The Journey That Saved Curious George exhibit from 1:00-3:00 P.M. on Sunday 11/15/09 at the Jewish Community Center. Docent-led tours will begin at 1:00 P.M. and 2:00 P.M. the only cost to you is your time. Students will receive extra credit for attending and this will be beneficial as we continue with our curriculum. This exhibit is being opened on Sunday 11/15/ for Cure of Ours Middle School students. I look forward to seeing you...Ms. Klein 11/12/09--Students worked on powerpoint today and will continue to work on powerpoint tomorrow. 11/10/09--Homework was online yesterday and will be written again today. STudents should read pgs 203-213 in literature book title "Eleanor Roosevelt" STudents are to have completed the definitions in the book for the "Eleanor Roosevelt" story. Students should have taken notes/summary of Eleanor Roosevelt in reading journal while reading. Today, students began reading "The Journey that Saved Curious George". Students are to outline and plan out the first seven(7) slides of powerpoint. We will be checking the planning sheet in class tomorrow 11/02/09--Students are to continue to read classic book. Students should be outlining the title and author slide on the powerpoint planning sheet as these two slides will be checked in class tomorrow. Finally, students are to complete four paragraphs on "Challenge yourself"-- a short story using the 5 attributes of themselves. 10/28/09--Students are to continue to work on reading classic book, completing graphic organizers as stated in class and below. WE will be in the computer lab on Friday 10/30/09 working on our classic 10/27/09--Students are to read classic book, record minutes, work on graphic organizers--triple entry journal, time line,--find 2 words and 2 phrases that reflect the language of that classic. Students need to be 50-75% finsihed by Friday. 10/26/09--Students will take a quiz on Washington Irving's Legend of the Sleepy Hollow. This essay quiz will include Ichabod Crane-his physical features, attributes, vice, his hobbies, and superstitions. Students should be able to give examples of inference and foreshadowing from Sleepy Hollow. In addition, students should be finishing reading their classic. 10/22/09--Students are to write a 2-paragraph summary on The Legend of the Sleepy Hollow. How does Irving use foreshadowing in his story? What inferences can you make? In addition, students should be reading their classic book--the goal is to be 50% through the book this week,. Quiz on Sleepy Hollow ion Tuesday 10/27/09 10/20/09--Students are to find figurative language, 2 similes, 2 meatphors in The Legend of the Sleepy Hollow. Students are to identify the setting specific time period, place, season etc. Students are to find 2 attribute, 1 vice, 3 hobbies of Ichabod Crane, Katrina Van Tassel and Yost Van Huten. Students are to explain how the announcer plays a role in this play? How does he set the mood, tone, setting, characters etc. 10/19/09--Students should keep reading classic--finsih at least half of it by 10/26/09 10/19/09--Students are to complete 45 facts on Washington Irving, defintions for simile, metaphor, inference, snipe, weathercock, wooing, virtue, anticipation, salubrious, bounteous, shriek 10/9/09--Students are to revise the 3 paragraphs of Edgar Allen Poe--these will serve as the body of the 1-3-1 essay that is due on Tuesday, 10/13/09. Therefore, students should use the strategies outlined for them in writing a 1-3-1 essay. The first paragraph is the introductory paragraph, then 3 bodiy paragraphs, then the concluding paragraph. Students need to use 5-6-7 rule with this essay. This essay should be typed, double-spaced and justified, with a title, byline(name) and date. 10/7/09-Students are to play outside for 20 minutes and collect 20 words that have to do with the season fall. Students should write down the 20 words on paper/ Students will also present brochure in class tomorrow. We went over public speaking tips in class- 0/6/09--Students are to turn in brochure tomorrow 10/7/09 10/5/09-Students were given essays in class today. Students are to write a 1- 3-1 essay based on the 3 paragrpahs that they rote in class last week. Students are to type, double-0space, justify the essay--This essay should include a title and heading. This essay is due on Tuesday, 10/13/09. This turn in essay will be a test grade. We reviewed extensively in class how to write a 3-1 essay using the 5-6-7 rule 10/5/09--Students are to define the following words, parts of speech: harnessed, monotonous, garrulous, dilapidated, straddle, cavorting, anvil, ornery, lurking, lattice. Students are to get Edgar Allan Poe essay and The Necklace signed by parent 10/2/09--S tudents are to complete the research worksheet on a classic, an author search on their classic book. Students need to follow the specifics as outlined in the 8 steps of the sheet. this is due Monday 10/5/09--100 point assignment 9/30/09--Students are to work on their brochures. Some students will be using colored pencils and paper to creat this. Others will complete with a word processor and computer 9/29/09-We are having problems with jumpdrives and computers; therefore, we will be postpone the due date of the brochure. Most students will be creating a brochure with colored pencils and paper. Students did a great job with the field trip today. See you tomorrow. 9/24/09--All students are to write the setting, character and theme of The Raven. Some students may need to read the poem online if they don't have a copy. Students should be finsihing brochure--finalizing the touches--The brochure is due on WEdnesday, 9/30/09 9/22/09--Students should be finishing up brochure in the computer lab--all fouor graphic organizers should be completed --If students still need help with brochure, they need to work in computer lab at 7:30 a.m. or from 3:15-4 Tuesday, Wed, and/or Thursday--brochure due 9/30/09 9/18/09--Students are to write a persuasive paragraph on each of the 4 qestions regarding their historical brochure. Paragraphs will be about 5 sentences since this is for a brochure. In additon. all four graphic organizers in reading journal should be completed by Monday 9/21/09. Graphic organizerers include timeline, standard plot development line, then/now ven diagram, and triple entry journal. Students are encouraged to work in computer lab at 7:30 monday morning on brochure which is being produced in publisher 9/16/09--Students are to work on rough draft of brochure--we will be in computer lab tomorrow to work on front panel of brochure, timeline of brochure, story elements of brochurs, then and now of brochure, quotes for brochure. Students need jump drive. All students should be in finishing mode of reading. Brochure will be due on 9/30/09 9/14/09--Students are to define the following 12 wrods/parts of speech: acute, audacity, crevice, derision, hypocritical, stealthily, stifled, vex, vehemently, fluently, wary, conceived--Students are also to continue reading historical fiction 9/10/09--Students are to use standard plot develoopment line graphic organizer, time line go, compare and contrast, and triple entry journal go as they read their historical fiction novel. Students should be completed with reading by 9/22/09. The minutes read count for reading journal. Students will be producing a brochure on this historical fiction book. Students will be using persuasive writing/reasons to convince the panel why this book should be incorprated in the curriculum across Kansas. Students have a copy of brochure requirements. 9/3/09--quiz tomoorow. Also, get The Monkey's Paw quiz signed tonite --Student should gave finished 75 minutes of reading. In addition, students are to finish reading the short story "The Necklace" and complete the graphic organizer in the reading journal. Students will have a quiz on "The Necklace" on Friday--this will include the vocabulary wrods as well as the standard plot development line,. / 8/31/09--Students are to define, to find the part of speech and spell correctly the following words: pauper, tureen, franc, venture, predicament, caste, dowry, boudoirs, consternation, petulant, tapestry, subordinate--due tomorrow 9/1/09 8/27/09--Students are to complete questions 1-5 from Monkey's Paw on looseleaf paper. These should be in complete sentences 8/26/09--Students are to continue reading 75 minutes--students should be reading a book of their choice currently--We will be working on graphic organizers concerning free read in class tomorrow. 8/25/09--All students are to write the definition, part of speech and spell the word correctly. Each word is worth 3 points. Keep up the stong work. Find a book--stretch your imagination 8/24/09--Students are to write two paragraphs from the notes they took on class regarding Vince Lombardi. Students are to think of the angle in which they are presenting the human spirit of Vince Lombardi--IE to a football team, to a group, community or biography. We are continuing to build with the theme of the "human spirit" Students were also assigned 75 minutes to read this week. We will review 2 graphic organizers, 2 words/1 phrase in class. 8/21/09-Students are to cut and paste 21 graphic organizers into their reading journal. These graphic organizers should be inserted into pages 95- 118. In addition, students are to find an article/and/or photograph of a person who demonstrates great enthusiasm.
