Vocabulary
and spelling made fun

Second grade students will have homework Monday through Thursday night of each
week. Please make sure you have a quiet spot for your child to complete their
work. Homework is meant to reinforce important concepts and new skills we are
learning in the classroom. Thank you so much for you help!

 Reading

Students should read each night for at least 15 minutes. Please allow your
child to read aloud to you or another family member.

 Math

Students should practice their basic math facts (1-12) each night for 5-10
minutes. The ability to quickly recall basic math facts will be crucial when
we begin adding and subtracting two and three digit numbers. This year the
students will be using the "Rocket Math" program in class to learn their math
facts. Students will be bringing home a sheet of problems nightly for you to
quiz them on to help them prepare for the next day's timed test.

Students can also practice with flash cards, timed tests, and oral quizzes
from a parent. I have also provided links to several online math sites for
the
students as well. You can find these on my "Links" page.

 Spelling

Students will take a spelling pre-test of 12 words each Friday and it will
come home in their Friday Folder that day. If your child correctly spells
each word on the pretest they will be given 5 additional challenge words to
study. All students are still expected to spell the original 12 words
correctly on their test on Thursday and everyone is encouraged to study the
challenge words whether they are required to or not. Each week I will post
the words on this web page in case you lose your list!

Each week our spelling words will be posted on SpellingCity.com. This website
offers a variety of ways for your child to practice their weekly words. Click
on the link below to check it out!
