SME Wrestling Handbook Work Hard, Work Smart, Work Together!!! Philosophy Wrestling is a sport that requires dedication, determination, discipline, confidence and coachability. If any one person is willing to put all the above areas together they will become a successful wrestler and also develop habits that will carry them through life. Attitude You are the only one who can keep you from being a champion!! You must push yourself as hard as you can. A real winner does not have to be pushed; the push comes from within! Hours of work, sweat and sacrifice lie behind each second of glory. Academics This is very important. Academics come before athletics. Student athletes are required by the state to be enrolled in a minimum of 5 classes. Students are required by the district to be passing a minimum of 5 classes to be eligible for competition. Students struggling with academics will be encouraged to get help before or after school until grades improve. Team Discipline If you need to be disciplined during the season that is a sign of you letting the team down. The ability to do what is asked of you is a sign of maturity. Tobacco, illegal drugs and alcohol will not: 1) make you a better person, 2) improve your athletic performance, 3) improve our team performance. Therefore, no wrestler, or manager will consume or have in their possession tobacco, illegal drugs, or alcohol during the wrestling season. Offense will result in dismissal from the team. Unacceptable behavior, public display of displeasure: Throwing headgear, temper tantrums, back talk to coaches or officials, unsportsmanlike conduct or flagrant misconduct penalty. 1st offense: Miss next contest and extra conditioning 2nd offense: Miss next 2 contests and extra conditioning 3rd offense: Dismissal from team. Anything not covered will be up to the discretion of the coaching staff and school administration. Practice Regulations In order to improve you must practice. There is no way that you can win and become a better wrestler if you miss practices. Role will be taken daily. If you, for some reason feel it is impossible to attend practice, you must personally notify one of the coaches prior to the practice. If you fail to do this it will be unexcused.
Reasons to Be Excused: 1) Family Emergencies 2) Illness 3) School Sponsored Activity 1st offense: Miss next contest and extra conditioning 2nd offense: Miss next 2 contests and extra conditioning 3rd offense: Dismissal from team. Anything not covered will be up to the discretion of the coaching staff and school administration. Tardiness becomes a habit and so does punctuality. Be on the mat and ready to start on time. Tardiness will result in extra conditioning after practice and excessive tardiness can result in dismissal from the team.

Challenges Up to February 1, a wrestler must defeat his opponent only one time for challenges that week for varsity positions. After February 1, a wrestler must defeat his opponent 2 out of 3 matches to earn a varsity position. All challenges must be announced in the wrestling room in front of the team. There shall not be any misconceptions over who is going to be challenging whom and for what varsity spot. Challenges are a privilege not a right, Coach Ufford reserves the right to determine if a wrestler loses that privilege or not. 1) You must weigh within 3 pounds of the weight you intend to wrestle on Challenge night. 2) If you give up your position due to illness or injury, you must challenge the person who took your spot to get it back. 3) If you do not make weight, you lose your position and go to the bottom of your weight class. 4) You must weigh within 3 pounds the night prior to a match in order to wrestle Varsity at the weight you intend to wrestle. Care of Equipment You are responsible for every piece of equipment issued to you. You must turn in the same equipment that was issued to you or be charged a replacement fee. All participants will wear team designated clothing to and during meets. Weight Reduction and ControlNo athlete will be asked to drastically reduce weight. This would be detrimental to their health. You son/daughter may however, have to drop some weight and perhaps miss a meal. Weight reduction can be accomplished in two ways, one healthy and one popular. The healthy way is to reduce your caloric intake but maintain nutritional balance in you diet. The other popular way, is to crash diet two or three days before the meet. This system sacrifices athletic performance and upsets the body. Try to maintain, not crash!! *KSHSAA regulates weight loss. An athlete may not wrestle at a weight class of 10% or more, less than the stripped weight on the first day of practice, unless he has a signed physician’s statement approving the amount of weight loss. The athlete must also have parental consent and Coach Uffords approval. Lettering Policy You must earn a total of 35 points to earn a varsity letter (15 of the points must be earned at the varsity level) or 25 points to earn a provisional letter. You must remain on the team, in good standing, until the completion of the wrestling season. The coaches reserve the right to give or refuse to give a varsity letter in special situations.
