Hey guys, we are missing 3 CDs from the collection. Please check around to see if you have CDs
by Harry Connick, Ella Fitzgerald, and Frank Sinatra. These were not checked out on the
computer but are missing from the collection. If you have these, please drop them by the band
room or put them in my mailbox in the office.
Happy summer!

Saturday is the big day-Evening of Jazz. Make sure you follow the warm-up tips that we talked
about in class. Be on the band stand, dressed, at 7:00 for our sound check. The uniform is our
formal look-black pants/long skirt, white wing-tip collared tux shirt, black bow tie, black
suspenders, and black shoes/socks. The t-shirt underneath should be plain white-please don't
wear something where words or designs show through.
A few of you have not purchased your Evening of Jazz shirt. Any that are not sold to band
members by 7:30 will be sold to the general public. We've had a number of requests already and
we need to recoup the money that has already been paid for the shirts by the band. They are 10
bucks each.
If at all possible, please bring a couple of two liter bottles of Coke products. We are about
20 bottles short of what we need for the Evening.
Thanks for all the work setting up today. I look forward to Saturday night and know that you
guys are going to be fantastic!

Everyone should be working to sell tickets. Turn in the money ASAP and ask for more tickets if
you can move them. The bigger the audience, the more fun for the musicians. Be creative, ask
your family and friends, of course. Don't be shy, you are worth hearing. Think about who else
you know might enjoy it. If you or your parents know some people into swing dancing or really
like the big band era music, this is a cheap way to hear a pretty darn good big band. Also,
practice your parts and be ready for all solos. We've got a lot of music and just a little time
so you won't get many chances in class.
2/22/08
The girls game will be Wednesday at 7PM. The guys game is Thursday at 7PM. Be here at
6:30 for both in our normal dress. We will not do any other games over the weekend. Further
games, if our teams make it will be on Friday, March 7th and Saturday, March 8th in Emporia. We
do not play consolation games so if we lose, we are done.
The band voted to play on April 4th at SM West for their annual Jazz on the Bridge. It is
a good show and tell performance. We will not play a performance on 3/6 which is on some
calendars. Don't forget those Dorian scales!

Jazz Biography Report Information
Instead of the three CD reviews that are required for the other quarters, you will do a
oral and written report on a major jazz figure for third quarter. You will select your artist
who must be approved by Mr. Adams. You will be assigned a presentation date. The written and
oral presentations are due on that day. One or two students will present each day.
Presentation Date ______________
Written Report
-Minimum of 3 complete pages. Pictures or other art are welcome but are not counted in the
three pages. Provide a bibliography of your sources that does not count in your 3 pages.
-Use standard “Word” margins with a font of 12.
-You must use a minimum of 3 information sources. No more than two can be from any one type of
source (website, book, CD, etc.)
-Present a brief biography of the artists formative years (environment, where, “class”,
influences), describe major events in their life focusing on music, describe their music (style,
collaborators, influenced by, influence who), what are some of their most significant/popular
recordings.
Oral Report
-The report should be 3 to 5 minutes.
-Don’t read your written report, just give us a summation of the most important information.
-Play a couple of recorded examples of representative work. If they are known for their
improvisations, make sure we hear that. If they are known for more than one style, let us hear
more than one.
-If you are not ready on the day your report is due, you will lose one letter grade. Each day
that it is late will be another letter grade.
-If Mr. Adams delays the report, there is no deduct

Happy long weekend! Our girls won yesterday so our game starts at 4:00. We need to be there to
set up at 3:30 so we can play before the game.
12/14/07
Guys, we will be making up the game that was cancelled due to weather this week on Thursday,
December 20th. This is the only girls' game we will play in December so let's make sure we have
a big noisy and, of course, very high quality band to support the ladies on their pink night.
By the way, I was really impressed with the progress you made on "Wind Machine" today!

It looks like the chances are good that we will have school on Wednesday. If so, our gig at the
Convention Center is on. Come to the band room at the beginning of 4th hour and we will miss
hours 4,5,& 6. Remember that we are wearing the jazz band shirt, khaki pants, and nice looking
shoes. They will have chairs but we need to bring everything else including stands, extension
and other cords, and an electric piano (thanks, Tyler!). If we don't have school, the gig is
off. I'll see you tomorrow (maybe!).
Pep Band Basketball Schedule
Each game is worth 30 points. You may miss one game without excuse but you do have to notify
Mr. Adams in advance. Missed games will be approved on a first come basis because we must have
acceptable instrumentation for every game. Points may be deducted for:
1. missed performance (you are allowed one)
2. showing up late or leaving early
3. not helping to set-up or tear down
4. not being in uniform
5. late for “quarter”-all band members need to be in position by 2 minutes on the clock for
3rd quarter. (you get 3rd quarter off except for post-season)
6. not participating or discipline problems
Unless otherwise noted, all games begin at 7:00. The band needs to arrive at 6:20 so that we
can play prior to the game. Everyone needs to help setup and tear down. The games end around
8:30.
Your uniform consists of the jazz band shirt and jeans or the new band shirt if we get it.

Good job on today's gig. Our client (doesn't that make us sound professional!) was very happy
with your music and enthusiasm. Below is the information I mentioned about the free concert by
the Kansas City Jazz Orchestra, a group made up of many of KC's finest pros.
The Kansas City Jazz Orchestra in conjunction with the Tony DiPardo
Instrumental Music Foundation is offering free tickets to hear former
child prodigy and current Sony Recording Artist pianist Eldar Djangirov
with the Kansas City Jazz Orchestra on Saturday September 29 at Unity on
the Plaza at 8:00PM. (47th and Jefferson on the Country Club Plaza)
Students and directors need only to RSVP to kcjo@sbcglobal.net to
reserve their tickets which they can pick up at the door. Or call
913-780-5250.

This will be a great night for students to hear the premier concert
jazz band in the region with one of the hottest young musicians on the
music scene today.
Thanks for helping us get the word out!

We've got a gig on Wednesday! Wear a football related shirt. It can be a jersey, t-shirt,
sweatshirt, whatever. It can be for the pros, college, or high school. As an example; any KU
or SMS spirit wear works and I guess MU or K-State would work, also. Other than that, dress as
you usually do for school as long as that doesn't include ripped up jeans. We aren't dressing
up but please don't look sloppy.
You need to come to the band room at the start of 4th hour. You don't need to go to your
regular class. We then go over to 10561 Barkley and park in the back. Wait near the rear
entrace and do not play. We are supposed to be a secret. You are excused from 4th and 5th hour.
This should be fun but it must be good! We are earning at least 250.00 for the band!
