Participation Eligibility Requirements

Music Requirements for the State and District Audition:

Students auditioning will be required to perform 
-a two octave, memorized major scale slurred up and tongued down.  The scale 
will be selected from one of the following concert pitch scales: Bb, Eb, Ab, 
Db, Gb, C, F, G, and D. Quarter note MM=120. 
-A full range, memorized chromatic scale slurred up and tongued down. Quarter 
note MM=120 
-Sections of the required etude/solos listed below. 
-Sight reading

Piccolo
The Modern Flutist by Andraud, Southern Music Co. (B430):p.38, "Polevetsian 
Dances" from Prince Igor by Borodin. Begin at the presto, line 10; play to 
the end of the page. 

Flute
"Polonaise and Badinerie" from Suite in B Minor by J.S. Bach in Concert and 
Contest Collection for C Flute; edited by H. Voxman, published by Hal 
Leonard. (HL04471610); Play the entire "Polonaise" movement (p. 18) without 
repeats. Play the entire "Badinerie" movement (p. 19) with repeats. NOTICE: 
The edition of this music has been changed because of accessibility and cost. 
While there are many arrangements of this composition in circulation, judges 
at State-Wide auditions will use the articulations and dynamics indicated in 
this arrangement. 

Oboe
48 Famous Studies for First Oboe or Saxophone, revised by Albert J. Andraud, 
Southern Music Company (B103): No. 20, Allegretto (p.10), play entire study. 
No. 13, Andante con gusto (p. 7) play entire study. 

Bassoon
Premier Solo by E. Bourdeau, edited by Voxman, published by Rubank 
(04476934): Play from the beginning of the solo to the "Plus vite" on the 1st 
page. Skip to the last two notes of line 1 on the second page, and play to 
the "Plus lent". 

B-Flat Soprano Clarinet
Concerto for Clarinet in B-flat by Mozart, Op. 107, K. 622. Revised and 
arranged by Simeon Bellison (Carl Fischer, W1668). 1st movement, Allegro 
moderato: p.2, play from beginning (Solo) to (1), skip to p.3 beginning at 
the 7th measure of (3) and continuing to (4). 2nd movement, Adagio: p. 9, 
play from (B) to (D). Use metronome markings as indicated. Corrections: 
Section B of the Adagio; 5th measure after (C), the next to last 16th note 
should be an F; 8th measure after (C), the last three 16th notes should be F, 
E, D; 9th measure after (C), the eighth note should be C. 

B-flat Bass Clarinet
Ten Solos for Concert and Contest, arr. by William Rhoads for Bass Clarinet 
(Southern Music, B447): Adagio and Allegro (in F-minor). Begin the Adagio at 
measure (3), playing to the first 8th note (G) of measure (33). Skip to the 
Allegro and play from the beginning through the dotted half note of measure 
(24). 

E-flat and B-flat Contra Bass Clarinet
Lamento by L. Bassi, edited by H. Voxman, published by Rubank (Hal Leonard 
04476889), listed as a Bass Clarinet solo: start at the beginning, and play 
to Piu Mosso, five measures before (4). 

Saxophones (Alto, Tenor, Baritone)
Sonata by Henri Eccles, arr. by Siguard Rascher, listed as an Alto Saxophone 
solo. (Theodore Presser 164-00047): Play all of movement one (I)-Largo. Play 
all of movement two (II)-Courante (no repeats). Play the entire measure with 
the high F# down one octave (Measure 16). 

B-flat Cornet and Trumpet
Concert Etude, Opus 49, by Alexander Goedicke. Hal Leonard (HL00121835): Play 
from the beginning to measure 28. Play from measure 32 (#3) and end on the 
first note of measure 60 (#6). Play the final note as a quarter note. 

French Horn
Horn Concerto No. 1 in E-flat major, Opus 11, Richard Strauss, publishers: 
International (1715) or Carl Fischer (Cu750): 1st movement, Allegro; play 1st 
line (measures 1-5) skip to 7th line, and play measure 76 to the end of the 
first movement (Measure 131). As indicated, quarter note MM-112. 

Trombone and Euphonium
Andante et allegro, J. Guy-Ropartz, arr. by A. Shipiro (Carl Fischer CU573): 
Andante- play from the beginning to the end of the 5th line (end on the "g"). 
Allegro- play from the beginning (line 7) to the three measure rest on line 
10 (end on the "d"). Skip to the "Brillante" section, and play to the end of 
the solo (last 4 lines).

Baritone TC would audition on the trumpet version of Andante et allegro, J 
Guy-Ropartz, arr. By A Shipiro (Carl Fischer CU572) 

Tuba
Variations on the Theme of "Judas Maccabeus" by G.F. Handel, Ludwig 
Beethoven, arr. by William Bell (Carl Fischer, W1644). Variation III: play 
from the beginning (measure 9) to the rest (measure 16). Variation IV: play 
all. 


Percussionists may audition in one or more areas, but a separate form and 
payment must be submitted for each audition area. 


Mallets
Masterpieces For Marimba, arr. by Thomas McMillan, Pro Art Publications 
(1202): Sonata by Archangelo Corelli pp. 16-17, play entire solo.

(10), p. 21, play entire etude, quarter note MM=112. Etude XI (11), p. 23,

Auditions Materials
For all instruments except drumset: A New Approach to Jazz Improvisation, 
Volume 7, "Miles Davis" by Jamey Aebersold, 1211 Aebersold Drive, New Albany, 
IN 47150.

For drumset: "Rhythm Section Workout" Volume 30B by Jamey Aebersold. All 
auditions will be performed with accompaniment play along recordings.



 
Excerpt Notes/Errata

A New Approach to Jazz Improvisation, Volume 7, page 15, measure 20 is 
incorrect. It should read the same as measure 4. 
#2 - posted May 6, 2009 
If your CD for Volume 7 "Miles Davis" has two versions of "Four" (one slow 
and one fast), use the fast version, mm = 224. 
 
Horn Auditions (Saxophone, Trumpet and Trombone)

Chromatic scale, using quarter notes at exactly quarter note equals 120. 
Students are to slur up and tongue down the full range of the instrument.
 
"Four" - Play melody through one time (first five lines), including first and 
second endings, total of 32 measures. Then improvise for one full chorus, (32 
measures) if you wish, for the optional improvisation portion of the audition.
 
"Milestones" - Play melody one time through; including the repeat of the 
first eight measures. 

Sight Reading 

Optional Lead Trumpet Audition (in addition to above material)
Set the metronome to 80 and play a one-octave F major scale ascending in 
quarter notes, starting on the top line of the staff. Play provided lead 
trumpet part (contact John Selzer to receive this music). 

Bass Trombone Audition (in addition to above material)
Set the metronome to 80 and play a one-octave B-flat major scale, descending 
in quarter notes, starting on second-line B-flat. Play provided bass trombone 
part (contact John Selzer to receive this music). 

 
Rhythm Section Auditions

Piano
"Four" - Using the left channel only (bass & drums), play written melody and 
provide a chordal accompaniment for one full chorus; then play one full 
chorus (32 measures) of an improvised solo. 
"Milestones" - Using the left channel only (bass & drums), play one full 
chorus (32 measures) of the written melody with the right hand while 
providing an appropriate chordal accompaniment with the left hand. 

Sight reading 

Guitar
"Four" - Using the left channel only (bass & drums), play written melody for 
one full chorus (32 measures); then provide a chordal accompaniment for one 
full chorus; and finally, play one full chorus (32 measures) of an improvised 
solo. 
"Milestones" - Using the left channel only (bass & drums), play written 
melody for one full chorus (32 measures); then play a chordal accompaniment 
for one chorus. 

Sight reading 

Bass
"Four" - Using the right channel only (piano & drums), play written melody 
only for one full chorus (32 measures); then provide a walking bass line for 
one full chorus; and finally, play one full chorus of an improvised solo. 
"Milestones" - Using the right channel only (piano & drums), play one chorus 
of a bass line (appropriate to accompany the melody). 

Sight reading 

Drums
Using the right channel only of Jamie Aebersold Volume 30B, play the 
following excerpts:
"Tippin' Time" - Play the first two choruses (24 measures) 
"Fast Mode Al" - Play the first melody chorus only (40 measures) 
"Reflection" - Using brushes, play the beginning to letter B (8 measures) 
"Samba de Luvsme" - Play the introduction, first melody chorus, and the 
introduction restatement.
