We are playing at Jazz on the Bridge at SM West Friday night, 4/7.  Our performance time is 8PM, our warm-up is at 7:30 in their band room.  Dress is the green jazz band shirt, khaki pants/skirt, and brown footwear/belt.  This is always a fun gig played before an appreciative crowd.  If you are out and about, the 6th grade jazz band plays at 5PM followed by Indian Woods.  They play in the cafeteria.  Also, stick around to hear Ryan Heinlein play with West's band.  He is the new band director at JCCC and a fantastic trombonist.

The jazz band is playing for the tree lighting at Mission Farms this Thursday evening.  Arrive about 5:50 in the parking lot behind the new St. Luke's building, this is at the SW corner of Indian Creek Pkwy and Mission Road across the street from Pizza Bella and right next to I-435.  We meet at 6PM at the round-about on Indian Creek Pkwy just west of Pizza Bella.  Our little parade starts around 6:10 where we and the SMS cheer squad lead the sleigh with Alex Gordon and his family.  Our route is pretty short.  At the end of it, there will be a little ceremony, Gordon turns on the lights, maybe we play the tunes one more time and we are done.  The lighting is supposed to be at 6:30.  Short and sweet and the donation will go to the players.

Wear the same thing we wore for the concert at the start of the month-black pants, footwear, suspenders, and bow tie and a white tux style shirt.  Please make those shoes all-black.  Mission Farms will provide Santa hats :-)

9/21/16

The Shawnee Mission Education Foundation Breakfast is tomorrow at the OP Convention Center.  We rehearse there this afternoon.  It is scheduled from 3:30-6.  Hopefully, we will be out earlier than that.  We need to be back at 7AM tomorrow morning so we are ready to play at 7:20 when the doors open.  Dress is black pants, shoes, socks and a bright solid colored shirt with tie.  Ladies my wear a bright solid color dress or go with a bright solid colored blouse with black pants or skirt and appropriate footwear.  As an example, I am going to wear black slacks, a bright green dress shirt with a black tie.

We will be playing for around a thousand people!  This is an important gig for us!

5/7/16

Thanks for an efficient setup this morning.  Evening of Jazz is in just a few hours.  We are wearing black and white-  Black pants, white tux-style shirt, black bow tie, suspenders and footwear.  We warm-up promptly at 7 so show up before then so you are ready.  I'm looking forward to an excellent performance.  You are playing very well, lately.

Make sure everyone stays until tear-down is complete.  If we all help, it takes less than an hour.  When you arrive, give ticket money to Mrs. Curtis   Also, any pop or dessert you can bring will be helpful.

Have fun tonight!

4/19/16

For the Wednesday gig, dress like pep band-green shirt and jeans, or whatever you prefer (thanks to Alex for asking).  Make sure you have a stand, music, and everything else you need for performance.  Rhythm section, make sure, along with your other equipment, to bring extension cords.  All we can count on are chairs and a power supply.

We are playing at the Indian Creek Health Care Center at 6515 W 103rd St, Overland Park, KS 6621.  We set up at 4:30 and play from 5-7.

Watch this link for any adjustments because of the expected rain tomorrow.  Right now, the weather forecast is for rain in the morning but it should be all done well before gig time.

4/14/`6

Jazz on the Bridge at Shawnee Mission West tomorrow (Friday night)-We meet in the band room in our Khaki's, brown shoes, and jazz shirts at 7:00 to prepare for our 7:30 performance.  Make sure you have everything you need for the show-music, instruments, cords, drum set parts you want to bring.  This is always a quick but fun performance.  Please invite your parents and friends so we've got a cheering section.

3/4/16

We will follow the team to the next round of the playoffs which will be at SM North, Saturday night at 7PM. Arrive at 6:30 so we can set up and play before the game. There will not be a bus. The band voted to meet there today during class. You need to bring a stand and equipment. Rhythm section, bring all amps, cords, and extension cords that we might need. This has often been a problem when some of these items were forgotten.
Playoff games are fun. I'm sure North will also have a band so we get our own competition with them. Wear your jazz shirt and jeans (normal game stuff).
If you need me to meet you at South to get equipment, make sure to e-mail me, otherwise, I will go straight to SMN and see you there. If I meet you at South, it has to be between 5:45 and 6:00. Any later and I will be late getting to North.
Let's make a huge rockin' roar and help the Raiders move on to State!

1/21/16

We will play a concert, along with the Indian Woods and 6th grade jazz bands, on Monday, Feb. 22, at Indian Woods.
You need to arrive at 6:30 for the 7PM performance.  We will wear the green shirts with khakis and brown footwear.

3/12/14

Here are links to some excellent summer jazz camps. You can learn a ton, have a great time, and meet people that are into jazz, like you. I highly recommend each of these.

We play tonight at BV North HS (12200 Lamar Ave).  Arrive at 6:30 for the 7PM game.  Wear you pep band shirt and bring a stand.  Rhythm guys, don't forget a long extension chord.  We do not have a game Saturday.  It has been a long and busy week but you have sounded great!

2/24/14

Add to your calendars 4/11 for a performance for the District's voluneer reception at Indian Creek Technology Center.  We will arrive at 7:45 PM and play from 8:10 to 8:30 then at the end from 9:00 until about 9:20.  We will do this instead of Jazz on the Bridge, this year.

2/23/14

We play at Indian Woods Monday night (2/24)!  Students arrive at 6:30 for the 7PM concert.  This is the annual performance that starts with the 6th grade jazz band, moves to the IW jazzers, and ends with our guys and gals.  The concert lasts just about an hour.  The band should wear their green jazz shirts, khaki pants or skirts, and brown footwear. This is always a fun one and it makes a huge impression on the middle school and elementary students and parents.

Looking ahead to post-season basketball: Sub-state games are 3/5-8.  They are played at the higher seeded teams court-we will play any games at South and other 2nd and 3rd round games.  We won't know where these games will be for sure until 3/1.  State is in Wichita this year. Games go from 3/12-15.  I'm not sure if we will play 1st round state games (Wed and Thur) but we will play, assuming we are still winning, the Friday and Saturday games.  Note that this is the beginning of Spring Break.  I would expect that we will spend the night in Wichita on Friday night if our guys and/or girls win that game.  You can see the tournament brackets, when they are posted at http://kshsaa.org/Public/Basketball/StateTimeSchedule.cfm.  Follow the links on the right side of the page.  The overnight and games last year were a ton of fun for the group.  Hopefully we can do it again this year!

Info for this week:

Our dress rehearsal (you won’t need to have students actually dressed in their outfits that evening as I will be giving you the T-shirts that night) at the Overland Park Convention Center, 6000 College Boulevard, is on Tuesday, September 24. Please plan to arrive at 4 p.m. for the rehearsal. The rehearsal for all choirs and the band will run from approximately 4-5:30 - 5:45 (depending on if we get started right away). We will then run the final song (high school choirs only) from approximately 5:45-6:30. The breakfast will be on Wednesday, September 25. You should plan to have your students there by 6:30 a.m. in order that they can be sure their instruments are set and ready to go and enjoy breakfast before playing. The students will enjoy breakfast from Chris Cakes between 6:45 and 7:10 a.m. in order to be in place in the ballroom and ready to play when the doors open at 7:15 a.m. They will perform pre-show music in the ballroom until approximately 7:30 a.m. They will remain in the hall until is it time to perform Everybody Rejoice around 8 a.m. or shortly after. The band students will be released to return following the performance and should be back at school around 8:30-8:45 a.m. The breakfast will end at 9 a.m. Also, please confirm that all of your students have their photo releases on file. Thanks.

Wear black pants and footwear.  You will be given a bright t-shirt.

Sept. 7, 2013

We have the State of the District practice in the auditorium on Tuesday this week.  We are scheduled to rehearse from 1:30 to 3:00 with the South and North choirs plus two elementary groups and the dance team from East.  Thanks for the time you are putting in on this.  It is an honor for us to be asked year after year to do this but it is also extra time on all of our parts.  There shall be food when it is all over!

Looking down the road, we will practice over at the OP Convention Center from 4:30 to 6:30 on the 24th.  The gig is the morning on Wednesday, the 25th.  Pretty cool; an audience of over 1000 and a new t-shirt!
