You should purchase lunch tickets at the registration table in the commons when you arrive. Tickets are $5 and you have a choice of pizza or a Chik-Fil-A sandwich.
Please remind your parents that there is a $1 admission charge to all concerts. I believe that there will also be plaques and other commemorative items for sale. If you find that for any reason you can't attend your rehearsal or performance, let me know so that an alternate can be contacted. You participate this weekend to audition for State. Good luck and enjoy some great music!
The Colts will be hosting a satellite audition camp at Lawrence High School on January 30th from 10:00am to 5:00pm. If you have any students interested in the drum corps activity, please help spread the word. As a former member, I can vouch for the Colts as a classy organization who balances the well-being of members with the quest for excellence.

Just a reminder that you DO NOT have to dry clean your uniforms this year.
:-) The uniform committee is taking care of that. However, you will need
to turn in the following items at the chili supper on December 10 ---
bibbers, jacket WITH neck band, sturdy hanger that your uniform came on,
shako, shako box, and any other pieces you may have borrowed throughout the
season such has another shako, used shoes, black socks, etc. We will be in
the band room at 5:00 (supper begins at 5:30) through the chili supper until
the start of the concert. Everything needs to be returned that evening
before the concert. STUDENTS: Mr. Adams will tell you about the incentive
to have your uniform turned in ON TIME. PARENTS: We will be sending all
the uniforms to the cleaners, so if your student does not get their uniform
in on time, you will need to make arrangements through the uniform committee
(and pay) to have the uniform cleaned.
If anyone is willing to help collect uniforms for a portion of the time that
evening (December 10), please let the uniform committee know (Karna
Pfoltner, Jeanette Brethour, Paula Schwabauer.) You will not need to help
the entire time. We will also need some volunteers to assist with getting
the uniforms back onto the racks after they are dry-cleaned.
Thank you to everyone who helped this year with uniform fittings and plumes
this year. There was added responsibility for every game and each
competition with the distribution of plumes. However, as usual, many
wonderful band parents stepped up to assist. I think the plumes added a
special touch to the uniform - which matched their magnificent sound.
Thanks again for all the help! We truly could not have done it without you.
To put it mildly, we had an extremely good day at district tryouts today in Baldwin. Against huge competition from across northeastern Kansas, we earned 28 individual positions which is the most we’ve had in many many years. OK, off the top of my head, I can’t remember a better year! Along with making District, these musicians are also qualified to tryout for State in January.
Those earning positions are:
Flutes-Erin Rand (R3), Jenny Gregory (6B), Shara Abvabi (7R), Kristen Jenson (9B), Julia Nelson (alt)
Clarinets-Sarah Mullinax (5B), Austin Belk (17R), Ricky Jennings (alt), Lauren Johannes (alt)
Bass Clarinets-Michael Camburako (3R), Joshua Reinsch (alt)
Bassoons-Benjamin Taylor (1B), Kailey Peterson (3R)
Saxophone-Haley Fetters-Crouch (4B)
Trumpets-Marina Hague (1B), Victor Boyda (1R), Jon Tobaben (3R), Jon Monsees (alt)
Horns-Justin Smith (1R), Muriel Hague (3B), Amanda Foster (8B)
Trombone-Stephen Hass (2R), Taylor Huhn (4B)
Tuba-Ashley Hung (6R)
Snare Drum-Blaine Anspaugh (1R)
Jazz Band-Marina Hague (trpt 1), Stephen Hass (tbn 3), Jon Tobaben (trpt alt)
This is the list I got from talking to students in Baldwin and checking postings. I’m doing this at home because I want to spread the good news. Please forgive any inaccuracies in placement or name spellings.
Now turn on the juice to prepare for State. Make sure you are getting some qualified coaching and practicing regularly. Private lessons are a very good idea and I am always very happy to work with you. This is good advice for anyone who plays in the band-not just our district members.
District Band Auditions
Nov. 14, 2009
The auditions for the 2009 KMEA Northeast District Honor Bands will be held at Baldwin High School on Saturday, November 14. Results of the auditions will be posted in the commons area once scores are tabulated.
-All students must be present for a meeting in the Baldwin High School gymnasium starting at 7:30 am on Saturday, November 14th.
-Students must supply their own instrument except in the case of percussion.
-No photocopies of the audition material may be used. The music will be available but you can use your own copy with your markings.

-Warm up and practice may only take place in the gym.
-Students selected for the Honor Band should pick up their music folder prior to leaving Baldwin High School, or make arrangements with another student to pick it up for them. Folders will not be mailed if they are not picked up. Mr. Adams and Mr. Kohl cannot pick up folders.
-The South directors will not be available until the end of the audition day. They will be busy in rooms judging. Make sure you ask any questions before the audition day.

Baldwin HS’s address is 415 Eisenhower, Baldwin City, KS 66006.
PROPOSED 2010 SYMPHONIC BAND INSTRUMENTATION
To accept a position in Symphonic Band, you must commit to all performances. If you cannot do this, let me know the conflicts immediately upon being invited into the band so that it can be determined whether you can be accepted. Symphonic dates are 1/26, 3/31, 4/8, 4/14, 4/28, 5/4, and 5/17 (graduation).
This is the approximate size of each section that I am looking for. Sections may be expanded or reduced depending on the quality of auditions. In general, I’m leaning toward a smaller band.
Clarinets and bass clarinets will be asked if they are interested in being considered for the other instrument. Saxophones will be asked for their preference of instrument; examples would be ATB, AAA, TBA, etc.
I will take the top score for each percussion inst (mallet, tymp, snare). The rest of the section will be determined by the highest combined scores of all three instruments.
Flute 7-8
Clarinet 8-10
Bass cl. 2-3
Oboe 2
Bassoon 2
Alto sax 2-3
Tenor sax 1-2
Bari sax 1
Trumpet 7-9
Horn 4-6
Trombone 5-6
Baritone 2-3
Tuba 2-3
Percussion 6-7
ORDER OF AUDITION
Monday-Flute, Clarinet, Bass Clarinet
Wednesday-Trumpet, oboe, bassoon, baritone
Thursday-Horn, Sax, Trombone, Tuba
Friday-Percussion
Auditions begin promptly at 7AM with the first section listed for each day. No one will be allowed to audition after the first member of the section has entered the audition room. You must audition with the rest of your section to be considered. Those who are not members of 1st hour band will be allowed to audition before 7:40 with the exception of percussion. You would need to plan on auditioning from 7AM until the end of 1st hour.
Dear Band Directors,
Congratulations to all the bands involved in the Festival of Champions over the weekend… especially to those who made the final 12.
My crew (not knowing much of what to expect of the day) was blown away by the performances and the energy on the field.
We shot great video of the event, and recorded incredible sound, thanks to many of you and your responses on soloist placement.
If any of you, or your students and band parents, are interested you can visit www.landersvisions.com to place any orders of this year’s Festival of Champions on high-definition DVD.
Again, great job to all of you and your students, and we look forward to being there next year for another round of great shows.
Thanks again for the opportunity to be a part of this great event.
Sincerely,
Brian Malicoat
