What is the SMS Area Fathers' Connection?

We're an organized group of dads from Shawnee Mission South backing the educational system and our community in order to make it the best possible place to raise a family. Members strive to set good examples for our children by being positive role models and by demonstrating an interest in their achievements and endeavors.

Established as an official organization in 2003, the South Area Fathers Connection has provided numerous tangible projects to improve the SMS community and grounds.  Students first crossed the entrance of Shawnee Mission South back in 1966. Since that date the school's landscaping had remained virtually the same, with no large scale improvements made until The South Area Fathers Connection, with the help of local businesses, decided to focus their first community project on re-landscaping the front courtyard at SMS. Projects completed towards this effort include the re-landscaping of the school's courtyard and main gym entrance, placement of the SMS white rock marker the school's entrance, and creation of the "RAIDER COUNTRY" island separating the parking lot and the school. In 2012, the SMS Fathers' Connection lead the effort to purchase and install the electronic message board that keeps our community informed about ongoing school activities.

Besides physical school improvements, the South Area Fathers Connection provides funds for academic and school achievements. We participate in community projects with our kids, introducing them to the importance of giving back at an early age. Staying involved and supporting your child through the elementary and middle school years might have included coaching their sporting teams or volunteering as a Boy Scout leader. A fantastic way to continue demonstrating parental support along with school and community enrichment is to join the South Area Fathers Connection.
