Summer Fun

Your child is stepping out of P1 and headed to the P2 year.  Several parents have asked for ideas of what you can do with your child this summer.  Here are some things the boys and girls can do.  Have fun.

1.     Go to the public library.  The library is sponsoring a fun reading program for the children this summer.

2.     Practice counting to 100 out loud.

3.     Write numbers as far as you can go.  Remember, numbers are infinite!!

4.     READ A GOOD BOOK EVERY DAY.

5.     Count the money in someone’s pocket or purse.  (Be sure to get their permission first).

6.     Go on a rock hunt.  Classify the rocks you find into as many categories as you can (smooth, rough, dark, light, etc.).

7.     Make an original ABC book.  On a separate page for each letter, draw as many items you can think of that begins with each letter.  (Be sure to write the words too.)

8.     Write a funny story about being able to fly.  What would you do, where would you go?

9.     Cut pictures of animals out of a magazine.  Put them in groups of Mammals, Fish, Birds, Reptiles or Amphibians.

10. Create a three-dimensional card for someone special.

11. Think of as many words as you can that rhyme with dog, hat and red.  You might even make up some new nonsense words!

12. Sing the insect body part song.  Explain to a grown up what we learned about life cycles.

13. Kiss your brain.

14. Make up a new cheer for someone special.

15. Tell someone the Grandmother Vowel story.

16. READ A GOOD BOOK EVERYDAY.

17. Go on a nature walk.  Collect items you can glue to a paper to make a nature picture.

18. Count by 2s to ten….or as far as you can go.

19. Use old socks to make puppets and do a puppet show for your family.

20. Draw a picture of someone and write a description of that person.

21. Spell as many words as you know how to spell on a sheet of paper.  Start with “I” and “a.”

22. Cut out pictures of items in a magazine that you can spell the words.  Be sure to choose some challenge words.

23. Count to 100 by tens.

24. Using playing cards, play Greater Gator (otherwise called War) with someone.  Remember to take out the face cards.

25. Using a random number generator (dice) play our place value game.

26. Sing the Good Morning song in Spanish, Bosnian and sign language.

34. Have a fun summer.  Write in a journal all the fun things you do.

35. All summer long think like a scientist, mathematician, author, illustrator and good citizen.
