CHS FCCLA Members Advance to State Competition

Recently five students from Corbin High School participated in the regional STAR Events 
competition at Whitley County High School. STAR (Students Taking Action for Recognition) events 
are competitive events in which members are recognized for proficiency and achievement in 
chapter and individual projects, leadership skills, and occupational preparation.  Richie 
Mathes, a sophomore, participated in the Entrepreneurship event and placed first in his 
division. Courtney Norvell, a junior, participated in Job Interview and placed first. Karlee 
Jaynes, Emily Hale, and Justin McIntosh, all sophomores, participated in Illustrated Talk. They 
placed second in their division. Mathes and Norvell will advance to compete at the state level 
in March in Louisville, Kentucky.


Chef Mike Visits CHS
Family & Consumer Sciences students at Corbin High School were treated to a visit by Chef Mike 
Simpson. Chef Mike is currently an instructor at Sullivan University in Lexington, Kentucky. At 
the age of 14, Chef Mike started his first restaurant business and went on to eventually own 
four different restaurants during his career. He has worked with several famous chefs from the 
Food Network such as Emeril Lagasse, Rachel Ray, and Sarah Moulton. Chef Mike has served as the 
head chef for the PGA tour and several other prestigious organizations. While at Corbin High 
School, Chef Mike talked to the students about careers in the food service industry as well as 
many food preparation skills. The students were able to assist him in making Bananas Foster 
Flambé as well as grilled chicken and vegetables. During his presentation, Chef Mike also 
talked to the students about various food preparation skills, food safety, and nutrition.
