Badminton Notes
Badminton is a very aerobic game. It is good for your cardiovscular
endurance.
It uses non locomotor skills of swinging , swaying, twisting, & turning.
It uses locomotor skills such as running and jumping.
The game began in Ancient China.
The modern version we know today started in 1873 in India. The British
soliders were playing the game and the called it poona. It is also became
an Olympic sport in 1992.
Badminton is similar to tennis in that you start the game with a serve from
the right service court into the court diagonally from the server or when
your opponent has an even number of points.
In badminton you must serve up closer and it must be underhand. In doubles
both servers will serve before it switches to the opponent's serve. Also,
you can only score a point when you are actually serving. You will play to
15 points and you must win by 2. In a regular match it is the best 2 out of
3 games. You also must return the shuttle in one hit, meaning your partner
can not assist you in getting the shuttle over the net.
The length of the court is 22 feet and the width is 17 feet. A regulation
net is 5 feet high.
A let is when some form of interference occurs and the point is replayed.
A fault is when you miss your serve or you do not get the shuttle back over
the net.
Types of Shots
Forehand
Backhand
Smash-which is equal to an overhead in tennis or a spike in volleyball
Clear- is a defensive stroke that goes high and deep in the back court
Drop shot- is used when your opponent is in the backcourt and you want to
barely get the ball just dropping over the net.
Team Handball Notes
The game is played with 6 full court players and 1 goalie.
The object of the game is to throw the ball past the goalie from behind the
3 point line.
Team Handball developed out of 3 different sports from the countries of
Germany, Denmark and Czechoslovakia. These sports started off using their
feet as in soccer then decided to use their hands instead.
Team Handball is a combination of soccer, basketball, and handball.
It became an olympic sport in 1936 at the Munich games.
Unforunately, because of World War II Team Handball was not revived in the
olympics again until 1972.
In 1972, the olympic games were held in Munich.
The Israeli team was kidnapped and later killed by terrorists.
Team Handball became an olympic sport for women in 1976.
Rules
The beginning of the game starts with a jump ball just like in basketball.
You may dribble the ball as many times as you want.
You have 3 seconds to get rid of the ball.
You can take 3 steps before and after you dribble the ball.
The goalie is the only person allowed inside the 3 point line.
The goalie can use their entire body to block the ball. Everyone else can
only use their hands.
You can run plays, set screens and build a wall.
You can jump in the air to take a shot behind the 3 point line but you must
release the ball before your feet land inside of the 3 point line. Just like
a 3 point shot in basketball.
If you go into the 3 point line it is a penalty shot for the other team.
If you double dribble or take too many steps it results in a free throw for
the other team. This will occur wherever the violation happened.
Eclipse Ball Notes
The game is started with a forehand as one would use playing tennis. Once
the ball goes over the net the other team must return it. If the ball
bounces more than 2 times then a point is awarded to the other team. Also,
if the same person hits the ball two times in a row, it is called a double-
hit. A point is then awarded to the other team. The first team to score 15
points and be ahead by 2 points is the winning team. The boundaries are the
half court line, baseline and the last black line at the back of the court.
You must rotate as you would in volleyball. If the ball hits the rafters
then you can play it, but it has to land on your side of the court. If it
lands on the other side, then that team gets a point.
Tennis skills used in the game are the forehand, backhand, volley and
overhead. Skill related fitness componets are speed, agility, coordination,
balance and power.
Play it means that you are playing a ball that the opponent hit out-of-
bounds. If you win that point the your team is awarded 2 points.
Volleyball Notes
History
William Morgan invented volleyball in 1895 in Massachusetts. He used the
inside of a basketball for the ball. He also used tennis nets. Now the
height of the net for women is 7"4 and 1/4 inch. The men's height is 8 feet.
Rules
You can not have more than than 3 hits when getting the ball over the net. A
block does not count as a hit. If the same person hits the ball 2 times in a
row, it is called a double hit. This results in a point for the other team.
If you make contact with the net at anytime, it is a point for the other
team. If the ball lands on the line it is considered in and the other team
gets a point. If the ball hits the rafters and goes over the net, it is a
point for the other team. If you miss a serve it is a point for the other
team.
There are 6 players on the court for each team. 3 in the front row and 3 in
the back row. You rotate when your team wins the serve. This is called a
side out. Each time the ball is put in play a point is scored. This is
called rally scoring.
In order to win a game you must score 25 points and win by 2 points. In
order to win a match you must win 2 out of 3 games.
Vocab
Foream pass(bump)- make sure your feet are spread shoulder width a part,
that your hands are interlocked and that the ball is contacted on the
forearms. Do not swing your arms.
Setting-pretend you are drinking from a 2 liter and spread your fingers a
part and make sure your thumbs are back. Then contact the ball only on your
fingers and follow through. Again make sure your feet are shoulder width

underhand that
you make a half fist and contact it on your palm. On the overhand make sure

Then make sure you open your hand and contact the ball above the net. If
you step on the line, it will de a fault and the other team will get a point.

sure you reach

Bowling Notes
Bowling started as far back as the Ancient Egyptians.
It became popular in the 1840's in the U.S.
Abraham Lincoln enjoyed bowling. In fact there is a bowling alley in the
White House.

Spare is worth 10 points and whatever you get on your next roll.(1 ball)
Split is where you leave two pins that are not next to each other.
Gutterball is when the ball rolls down the gutter and off the playing area.
Foul is when you step over the foul line and it results in a 0 for that turn.
A perfect game is a 300.
A beginning bowler who can get 120 is considered good.
For professional bowlers anything over 200 is considered good.

Basketball Notes
James Naismith invented basketball in 1891, in Springfield, Mass.
He used 2 peachbaskets as the goals and he used a soccer ball.
There are 5 positions, 2 guards, 2 forwards, and 1 center.
A field goal is when a basket is scored. It can be either a two pointer or a
three pointer.
A free throw is worth 1 point and you shoot these when you are fouled.
A double dribble occurs when a player dribbles the ballwith two hands or
when they pick up their dribble and start dribbling again.
A travel occurs when you walk with the baketball.
In high school and middle school you play 4 quarters.
In college you play 2 20 minute halves.
On defense you can play a zone or man to man. In a zone you guard a certain
area and in a man to man you guard a particular player.
You will have to tell me 2 locomotor and 2 non-locomotor skills that you use
while playing basketball.
Also know the proper techniques for dribbling, passing, and shooting.
