King/Queen of the Week Each Monday a child will be chosen to be the King/Queen of the Week. First we will crown and robe the child and have them sit on their throne. We will take a sentence strip and model writing the child's name. Putting that name in the pocket chart we will rewrite their name again. As we are writing their name we will pay special attention to each letter. Then we will cut the letters apart leaving out each sound . After the name is cut up the child will get to put their name back together again, using the first sentence strip as a guide. All of the children will get a white board to try to write the king/queen's name. Then we will add the child's name to the word wall and let the cheering begin! Everyone will cheer out the child's name- "Give me a ------what's that spell? Then we will clap, snap, howl, growl, chant, "yell" & "whisper" their name. After we have finished we will then have the children draw a picture of what the king/queen looks like and we will create a book that they can take home. On Wednesday we will again talk about king/queen's name by using a venn diagram. Comparing their name to someone else's in the class that is chosen from the little red box. How many letters are the same and how many are different? On the overhead projector we will put the king/queen's name and play a game with those letters. On Friday the children will trace the king/queen on a large butcher block paper. During center time each group will get to measure the arms, legs, head etc... with various materials and then color it to make it look like a king/queen. The king/queen will get to take home their book and class drawing on Friday. This will be for the first 13 weeks, the second 13 weeks we will do different activites and they will get a chance to bring in a special toy, book, and tell us about themselves.
