Caterpillar to Monarch Butterfly
Mrs. Reis and I would like to let you know that we have some pretty exciting stuff going on in our classrooms this week. Last weekend Mrs. Reis found several Monarch caterpillar's in the field next to her house. They were enjoying their favorite food which is milkweed. She decided to bring a few of them into school. There are several caterpillars in the kindergarten and pre-k classrooms. They are in special containers and we have seen some pretty awesome stuff happening. So far we have watched them eat the milkweed leaves and watched them grow (which happens so fast). We have also witnessed them going to the top of the netting and hang from the top in the form of a "J" and today we saw the first one turn into a chrysalis. The chrysalis is a beautiful green color with gold dots on it. Both classrooms
have seen smartboard presentations on how a caterpillar turns into a butterfly as well as a video about it. We are looking forward to watching the rest of the tranformation over the next week. We thought the parents would be interested in how this whole miraculous process works so below you will find several videos that will help explain how it all works. We hope you enjoy talking with your child about the caterpillars and their amazing transformation.
