NAME:
Mrs. Shubert
SCHOOL:
Abita Springs Middle School
CLASS:
6th Grade Social Studies, Math, and Science
I have taught everything from kindergarten through 8th grade in North
Carolina, Virginia, Texas, and here in St. Tammany Parish, Louisiana for
more then forty years.
What does it take to keep me happy? That's simple. I truly enjoy seeing
the shining, smiling faces of my students. Once someone told me to tell
students, "I am not here to make you happy; I am here to educate you." I do
not believe this statement is totally true. I believe that happy students,
whether they are children or adults, learn more readily.
Our class is structured to meet the needs of the individual students through
individual, peer, and Cooperative Learning Teams (CLTs). At the national
level, we have "No Child Left Behind," and in St. Tammany Parish, we focus
on the "Guaranteed Curriculum" and "Differentiated Education" and PBS. In my
personal opinion, these newest catch phrases are not all that new to
teachers who have, for years, addressed the needs of every child in their
class. They have, however, led us to rethink old strategies and select even
more exciting and challenging methods of implementing these goals.
We have embarked on the adoption of a new movement called "Working on the
Work" or WOW! In simpliest terms, teachers are really focusing on engaging
our students in meaningful, useful, and worthwhile adventures in learning.
The old expression, "You can lead a horse to water, but you can't MAKE him
drink" really applies to learners of today. The activities we ask our
students to volunteer and commit to do must be exciting and stimulating on
many levels, so they will really be attractive to all learning styles of
those who may undertake them.
Truly dedicated teachers recommit to be continuous learners, as life goes on
in the school place and the real world. I believe we continue to learn from
our students on a daily basis! I know I do, and I thank them for the
opportunity to associate with such a grand student body as we have here at
Abita Springs Middle School!
