1. What makes a sentence:

2.Types of sentences:
*statements(.)

*exclamations(!)
3.Subject:tells who or what the sentence is about
4. Predicate:tells what the subject is doing
5.Commas:
**Use a comma between the date and year
example: September 24,2008
**Use a comma between a city and state
example: Slidell,Louisiana
6. Combining subjects
**example:
Kennedy went to school. Aliyah went to school.
**Use _and_ to join both sentences.
answer-Kennedy and Aliyah went to school.
7. Nouns:
� A noun is a word that names a person, place, or thing.
� Some nouns name people.
A GIRL mows the lawn. Her DAD plants a tree.
� Some nouns name places.
This is my BACKYARD.
� Some nouns name things.
The FLOWERS are yellow.
� Use commas to separate three or more words in a series.
� The word 'and' or 'or' comes before the last word in a
series.
I see flowers, plants, and trees.
A rose may be yellow, white, red, or pink.
8. Proper Nouns: nouns that name special people,things, and places
example:
place:Abney Elementary
thing:Snickers
people: Mike
9.Abbreviation: a short form of a word
10.Singular nouns- names one person,place, or thing:
ex. a turtle one boat
11.Plural nouns -name more than one person, place, or thing
**add -s to form the plural of most nouns
ex. boat-boats
**add -es to form plural of singular nouns that end in s,sh,ch, or x
ex. bench-benches
**to form the plural of nouns ending in y-change y to i and add -es
ex. baby-babies
12. Possessive nouns-shows who or what has something
13.An action verb is a word that shows action.
� An action verb shows what someone or something is
doing.
Isabel tells a story. Martin listens to Isabel.
� Some action verbs show actions you can see.
Habib reads a book.
� Some action verbs tell about actions that are hard to see.
Habib enjoys books about animals.
**add an apostrophe(')and -s to a singular noun to make it possessive
ex.duck's egg
**adding apostrophe to most plural nouns
ex. two puppies'
