Gator Lessons

Gator Lessons Unit 5

These are the new skills that we are working on for this unit as well as the skills that we've already practiced.  Please review the letters and sounds at home.  Students should also work on writing the letters and numbers learned.  Students should also practice identifying and writing their names.
 
Unit 5:  Animals All Around

Enduring Understandings
Animals are an integral part of our world.
Animals live in our world.
 
Essential Questions
Why are animals important in our lives?
Where do animals live?
Why do animals need food?
 
Lesson 1:  Mama Cat Has Three Kittens
During the week of November 30, we will
  • learn about the letter Oo
  • review the letters i, t, p, m, a, s, n, c
  • learn the high frequency word is
  • reivew the high frequency words I, can, like, the, see, a, we, go, to, have
  • learn the number 10
  • review the numbers 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9

    During Morning Meeting, we will discuss pets.  We will name words that begin with o.  We will make up sentences about pets.

    During Every Day Counts, we will practice days of the week, months of the year, numbers, shapes, counting and patterns.  We will also practice counting money and making graphs.

    These skills will be reinforced through workbook pages and other activities on the Promethean Board.  We will sort pictures by beginning sound.  We will read short stories that contain the high frequency words listed above.  We will also use flashcards to review the letters and words that have already been taught.  We will also practice segmenting words and blending sounds to form words.  We will practice the word family -et.  We will practice sequencing and summarizing our stories.  We will read and discuss the stories about pets.  Some of the titles are:
    •  Three Little Kittens 
    • Mama Cat Has Three Kittens 
    • Let's Go to the Vet

    Later, we will use the Promethean Board to practice number sequence.  Other Promethean Board activities include creating patterns using pet counters.  We will also practice counting items and writing numbers and letters.  We will practice our position words by moving pets around a cage

    Our learning stations help to reinforce the skills above.  During this week, we will
  • compare block trains using more/less, greater/fewer, same/different
  • paint a pet for a class booklet, "Our Favorite Pets"
  • role play vets or farmers
  • sort pet counters
  • graph our favorite pets
  • form letters and numbers with different items
  • practice addition to ten using pet counters
  • measure dried foods or other small items
  • play games on www.starfall.com that are relatd to the letter of the week
  • listen to the Earobics story at the listening center
  • build with blocks
  • practice speaking to others during housekeeping
  • practice eye-hand coordination while doing puzzles
  • match letters
  • create patterns using pets
  • play games to practice number recognition and shape identificaton
  • match pictures that begin with the same beginning sound
  • practice rhyming words by matching pictures that rhyme
Here are additionals questions to ask at home:
  1.  Can you name words that begin with o?
  2.  Can you name words that rhyme with pet?
  3.  How many ways can you make 10?
  4.  Which weighs more, ___ or ___?  Use different items that are easy to decide.
  5.  Which is longer?
  6.  Which has more?
  7.  What is the beginning sound of ___? 
  8.  Can you name a type of pet?
  9.  Can you name a number that is greater than 63?
 10.  What is next in this pattern dog, cat, dog, cat...?
 11.  Can you use is in a sentence?

Lesson 2:  Animal Babies ABC
During the week of December 7, we will
  • learn about the letter Ff
  • review the letters n, i, t, p, m, a, s, c, o
  • learn the high frequency word play
  • reivew the high frequency words to, I, can, like, the, see, a, we, go, have
  • learn the number 11
  • review the numbers 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10

  • paint a farm animal for a class booklet, "The Cow on the Farm" (like "The Wheels on the Bus")
  • role play farmers
  • sort animals
  • graph favorite farm animal
  • form letters and numbers with different items
  • practice addition using manipulatives
  • measure small items
  • write our names
  • act out action words
  • play games on www.starfall.com that are relatd to the letter of the week
  • listen to the Earobics story at the listening center
  • build with blocks
  • practice speaking to others during housekeeping
  • practice eye-hand coordination while doing puzzles
  • match letters
  • create patterns using animals
  • play games to practice number recognition and shape identificaton
  • match pictures that begin with the same beginning sound
