Unit 3.1 Fall

Study Focus Leaves

Study Focus Description: This study focuses on the season of fall and things that change or happen in the environment during this time of the year.

Student Understandings: Students will develop an understanding that the weather changes each season of the year and with these weather changes there are changes in the environment.

Guiding Questions:

1.      Can students understand that the weather changes?

2.      Can students understand what a season of the year is?

3.      Can students understand that when the weather changes that the seasons of the year change?

4.      Can students understand that the environment changes?

5.   Can students understand the different stages of plant growth?

Guiding Vocabulary: fall, autumn, spring, summer, seasons, weather, leaves, apples, pumpkins, seed, vine, tree, seed, sprout, plant, squirrels, acorns, harvest

MONDAY

Morning Meeting--The students will tell things they are thankful for.

Guided Literacy--The stundents will complete a circle map with facts they know about leaves.

Small Group--The students sort leaves by color.

Tuesday

Morning Meeting-- The students will tell things they are thankful for.

Guided Literacy--The students will sing "The Leaves Are Falling Down."

(sung to the tune of "The Farmer In the Dell")

The leaves are falling down.

The leaves are falling down.

Red, orange, yellow, and brown.

The leaves are falling down.

Small Group--The students will put acorns with letters on them in order to spell their first names.

Wednesday

Morning Meeting--The students will tell things they are thankful for.

Guided Literacy--The students will sing "Leaves Are Falling."

Leaves are fal-ling down.

Slow-ly to the ground.

Some are gold. Some are brown.

Nev-er make a sound.

Small Group--The students will create a fall tree.

Thursday

Morning Meeting--The students will tell things they are thankful for.

Guided Literacy--The students will sing "Five Little Leaves."

Five little leaves up in a tree;

They're as bright as they can be.

Along comes the wind blowing all around,

And one little leaf falls to the ground.

Small Group--The students will create leaf patterns.

Friday

Morning Meeting--The students will tell things they are thankful for.

Guided Literacy--The students will "Leaves Are Falling All Around."

Leaves are falling all around-

Red,

Yellow,

Orange,

And brown.

Twirling, swirling to the ground-

Look how many leaves I've found.

Small Group--The students will go on a leaf walk to collect fall leaves.

CENTERS:

Pumpkin scented playdough

Pumpkin playdough letter mats

Add brown construction paper to creat trunks and dot paint for leaves

Add fall stamps

 Blocks

Encourage the children to build an apple orchard & pumpkin patch

Add leaves to sort by color and type

Add squirrel to acorn numeral match
