Math Games

 

Tens Go Fish
Materials: Deck of number cards (0-10). 

Each player is dealt five cars. Players take turns asking each other for 
cards that when combined with a card in their hand will total ten.  If a 
player makes a combination of 10, those cards are placed on the table, a new 
card is draw from the deck, and the player’s turn is over.  If a player 
cannot make a combination of 10, a card is drawn from the deck.  If the 
player draws the card he or she requested, the player can put down the 
matching pair; then the turn is over.  The game is over when there are no 
more cards left in the deck.  At the end of the game each player makes a 
list of the combinations of 10 that he or she collected.

Turn Over 10 
Materials: Deck of number cards (0-10 with wild cards).

Arrange the cards face down in four rows of five.  The remaining cards are 
placed face down in a pile.  Players take turns trying to turn over the 
cards that total 10.  If the total is more than 10, the turn is over and the 
cards are place face down again.  If the total is exactly 10, players take 
the cards, replace the missing cards with cards from the deck and continue 
their turn.  The game is over when no more 10’s can be made.  At the end of 
the game each player records the combinations of 10 he or she found during 
the game.

Close to 20
Materials:  Deck of number cards (0-10): Counters

Two or three players are each dealt five cards.  Players each choose three 
cards that total as close to 20 as possible, then record the cards total on 
a score sheet (ex: 7+2+9=18).  The score for the round is the difference 
between the total and 20 (ex. 20-18=2) record the score and take that number 
of counters.  The three used cards are discarded and three new cards are 
dealt.  The winner is the player with the fewest counters (lowest score) 
after five rounds. For a special challenge: play without counters, add 4 
wild cards to the deck, wild cards can be used as any number.

Doubles
Materials: Number cards (1-10)

Place cards face down in four rows of five.  Turn over any two cards.  If 
the two cards are the same, write the number sentence and solve.  If the two 
cards are not the same, place the cards back.  Replace cards used.  Game is 
over when all cards are used.  For extra challenge try doubles plus one 
facts.

Double Fun – Do by yourself!!!
Materials: Number cards (1- 10)

Place number cards face down in a pile. Choose a card add that number and 
its double mentally and say the double fact aloud.
Beat the Calculator
Materials: Several number strings; calculator
Take turns solving number strings mentally and using the calculator. 

Collect $ .25 (or $ .50, $ .75, $1.00)
Materials: A variety of coins, 2 number cubes (dice)

Players take turn rolling the number cubes and collecting the number rolled 
in cents.  Players can trade coins for equivalent amounts.  The first player 
to collect $ .25 (or other amounts) wins.

Addition Battle
Materials: Deck of number cards (Aces = 1)

For 2 players: Split the deck of cards evenly.  Each player places their top 
card down in the center at the same time.  The player that adds the two cards 
up the fastest and also correctly wins that round.  Repeat until no cards are 
left. 
For 3 players: Same as above but adding 3 cards.
