Enduring Understandings

Curriculum Information – as of October 5, 2009

 

The Enduring Understandings and Essential Questions guide what the students are learning in the curriculum, changing with the Units we are studying.

English Language Arts Unit 2:  Just For Fun

Enduring Understandings:

  • My friends and I learn new things as we grow.
  • Everything that I know and everything that I do helps me to understand others.

Essential Questions:

  • Why is it important to learn new things?
  • Why do I need to understand others?
  • How do I know when I understand others?

Mathematics Unit 2:  Number Sense

Enduring Understandings:

  • Knowing how things are alike and different is important.
  • There are many ways to “tell about” a number.
  • I can think in numbers.

Essential Questions:

  • Why do we need numbers?  How are they used in our world?
  • How can I tell about how things are different and how they are alike?
  • How can I “tell about” a number in different ways?
  • Why is it important for me to think in numbers?

Social Studies

Enduring Understandings:

  • I know who the leaders are in my school community and can identify the responsibilities of leaders to make the school a place of learning.
  • I know my responsibilities as a classroom citizen and I have a basic understanding of jobs in my community.
  • I understand the role of individuals as consumers.

Essential Questions:

  • Can students identify leaders in the school community and their responsibilities?
  • Can students identify responsibilities as members of the school community?
  • Can students recognize American symbols and patriotic songs?

Science

Enduring Understandings:

  • I understand the structure and basic functions of the systems of the human body.
  • I can identify major parts and systems of the human body.

Essential Questions:

  • Can students state the purpose of a skeleton?
  • Can students identify and describe the parts of the body involved in digestion?
  • Can students describe the pumping action of the heart and explain that it sends blood to all parts of the body?
  • Can students describe muscles that are voluntary and involuntary?
  • Can students locate the heart on his or her body?  The stomach?  The lungs?  Certain bones?
