Announcements

Thank you so much for all the wonderful cards and gifts. The children were
so excited with presenting them, and we made a big presentation about
opening and acknowledging everything. Your support throughout the year has
meant so much. This is a great group, and I will miss them dearly.

In reading for Monday and Tuesday, we will read Story 6, Book 5 "The Big,
Big Sea." It is the only story in the reader which we haven't done. It is
shorter, and we will answer the questions in class on Tuesday.

It was fun seeing so many in the class at Reading Renaissaince Night.

I have 4 extra copies of the class picture if you didn't order one. The
cost is $10.00.

Have a safe, happy, relaxing summer. Encourage your children to read
daily. One of their gifts from me will be a journal. You might set aside
time every couple of days or while you are taking a trip for them to record
their thoughts.

Spelling Procedures: Your child needs to study the highlighted words in his
spelling notebookfor a spelling test on Tuesdays. We are trying to
individualize spelling so each child has different words to work on. We do
a spelling activity each morning at school to practice. At home he/she will
use ideas for activities glued in the back of the spelling notebook and work
only on the highlighted words. Make sure he/she is doing the correct unit
and can read the words. Please initial on the page in the spelling notebook
with the highlighted words and put the name of the activity chosen. Do not
send anything back to school. Your initials show that you have supervised
and checked the spelling work. The spelling tests will usually be on
Tuesdays and the Pre-Test for the next unit will be on Wednesdays.

Graded papers are going home on Monday. They just have to be
signed on the front. Please go over missed items with your child on these
and daily papers. That is so much more beneficial and time efficient then
my trying to go over all of them as a class because attentions are short,
and your child knows some or a lot of it.

If you want to set up a conference with me, I am usually available at 7:40
on Tuesdays through Friday or after school (3:30) Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and
Thursdays. I do need prior warning to collect notes and fill out conference
forms so our time is used wisely and I can give special thoughts to you. If
you send a note in front of your child's folder, please give a couple of
alternative times that are good for you. I do stay later most days if you
need a later time. I do not like having conferences during school time as I
usually am stuffing folders, running work, or checking folders.

Your child will be bringing home an orange reading folder each day as well
as the Daily Folder. On Mondays, a story and words will be highlighted.
Please initial the words and story after you have gone over them. If your
child has trouble with any words, revisit them nightly until the words are
automatic. Easiest: Lay all words down. You call a word and have the child
find it. Harder: Shown a word card, your child recognizes the word after
you give a phonetic or meaning hint. Hardest: Your child knows the word
automatically and can use it orally in a sentence. The small books coming
home this week need to stay at home after being read. Initial the back of
the orange folder to let me know they've been read. Keep all small books in
a reading treasure box. Revisit them when you have time or as extra practice.

Birthdays: Please send a note if you are sending treats for a birthday as I
have to plan extra time for this. Cupcakes are MUCH easier to serve than
cake.

Continue asking your child for his full name, birthdate with year,
a usable telephone number, address, telephone number, and address.
These are safety facts that he/she should know instantly, but will forget if
you do not review them periodically.

Be sure to send a nutritious snack and drink (not sodas or candy) each day.
Some children are bringing too much snack. We have only 15 minutes to eat
it and go to the bathroom.
.

Special Activities: PE - Monday and Friday( Make sure your child wears good
shoes for running activities.)
                     Art - Tuesday
                     Library - Wednesday
                     Music - Thursday

Please put names on all lunch boxes.

Important Numbers: Office 643-0674
                   Cafeteria 643-7876
                   Counselor 645-8668

Your child must pass both reading and math the last nine weeks in
order to be promoted to second grade.

Reading Folders will go home every day. This will start next week. The
vocabulary words and main story will be highlighted as needed. Please sign
when studied and/or read. There is a form at the back of the reading folder
to sign for small books. This lets me know your child is reading at night.
The small books should be kept and reviewed. If your child decorates a shoe
box, he/she can keep them and feel a sense of accomplishment as the books
get harder. It is a visible sign of his/her reading improvement. We start
off slowly in first grade, but if this pace is too slow for your child,
please encourage reading of other books at your house and oral or written
making of sentences with the reading vocabulary. If your child is having any
difficulty saying the vocabulary words, please make flashcards and show them
in a different order each time. Your child will need to use these words in
fill in the blank sentences each Friday.

I have recorded your child's lunch number in the front of the red folder.
Please send lunch money in an envelope marked with your child's name, my
name, and Room 20.Thank you for your help.
