When will I see my child's work?

Graded papers are sent home once a week--usually Tuesdays. There will be a
blue half sheet attached to the top. Please sign and return the BLUE SLIP
ONLY. Keep the graded papers to go over, correct, and review with your
child. Occasionally I keep work samples for the child's portfolio. Many
times those are strictly samples and a grade is not recorded. If I do keep
a paper for which the grade is recorded, I will include that information
with the weekly papers and/or make a copy to send home.

How do I know my child's AR level?

The AR levels will be sent home during the second week of school after STAR
testing and reading inventories have been completed. Check your child's
daily agenda for notes; feel free to write me a note if you have questions.

What are my child's AR goals?

AR goals will be sent home at the same time as the AR level. Generally,
each child is expected to read and test on a minimum of one book per week in
class, but this will be increased as reading abilities increase. Awards
will be given for earning points, and for attaining personal goals, and
other criteria throughout the year.

What does my child have for homework?

See the homework page of this web site for general information. For
specific assignments, see your child's agenda or assignment book. Every
day, Monday through Thursday, your child is given time to record the
homework assignment for that day, and bring his agenda to Mrs. Williams or
Mrs. Henderson to be verified and initialed.

What if I have questions about my child's work?

a. Please write a note in the agenda (assignment book)if you have any
questions. If you have other communication, a short note on the agenda page
will alert us to look for an envelope or letter elsewhere in the child's
binder.
b. Please feel free to email me--simply use the email icon in the upper
right hand corner of the home page. This is the best way to communicate
since I can check it any time at work or even at home, and respond
immediately and directly to you!
c. If a conference is needed, you may call the school office to schedule
it. Please allow a minimum of 24 hour notice since the office is not aware
of my personal schedule outside of school hours.

What if my child is absent?

In a resource class, the children need to be in school to get the intense
direct instruction we provide so they will make the progress you want to
see. When children have an excused absence, we give them an opportunity to
make up the work missed. Please be available to help them at home since
they are still learning new material at school! Usually, 48 hours is
allowed. We are flexible but firm in following school board policy.
Children absent one day should be prepared to make up tests the day they
return.

What if my child forgets his/her work at school?

Homework is assigned for practice on material that is being taught and
developed in class. Grades are given for homework. But I also give
students a second day to get it turned in -- with one letter grade lowered.
If the student 'forgets' a second day, he/she will not have an opportunity
to turn it in for a grade. It is also important that students learn
responsibility for doing their work.
