Concepts & Skills

Your child will be an author! Yes!!
One of our favorite learning activities is the book my students write during
the last quarter of each year. This year, my third and fourth graders are
writing any autobiography. All fourth graders do this as a yearly project,
so my fourth graders will create 'real' hardbound books. My third graders
will have books bound nicely with binding combs. Some of the pages include
information about their birth, the family tree, and other information that
you may be able to help them with. Look for yellow notes or notes in the
daily agendas weekly if they need background information. Also, the books
will be illustrated. If you have EXTRA pictures that can be included in the
book, your child may ask for them. Otherwise, they can draw any
illustrations needed. This will be a great project and a lot of fun.

In math, we are working on multiplication. There is a "road map" posted in
our room with various traffic obstacles where students' cars need to stop.
Each child has made a paper car and goes from stop to stop as he/she learns
the 1's, 2's, 3's, etc. multiplication tables. This is a great motivator to
try to memorize those facts.

Another project that we are taking on this quarter is to master cursive
handwriting (4th grade), or at least learn all the cursive alphabet (3rd
grade). What a difference we are seeing already!
