3rd Grade Math
Sept.29- Oct.2, 2008
I will not introduce any new material for testing this week due to no School on Fri. We will do a math log together. We will review our math test, and have a retest on THURSDAY. Please note the study guide that the students have created below.
Also please continue to review math facts with your children so they can say the answers without using fingers or counting up. They are the building blocks for all of our math. Also check out the Math Sites link for fun ways to practice.
Study Guide :
- am means after midnight, so 12:00 am is midnight and all am's are after that.
- 12:00 pm is noon so all pm's are after noon.
- When we skip count by three it is every third number. 3, 6, 9, 12, _15__
- We count money by counting the larger coins, then the smaller coins. First count the quarters, then the dimes, then the nickles, and then the pennies.
- Making change for $ 1.00, we count up first to the nearest ten, then to the hundred.
I bought a toy for $ .58 I go up to 60 ( 2 cents) Count up to 100... 70, 80, 90, 100.
My answer is $ .42
- Rounding to the nearest ten... Look at the ONES place. If it is lower than 5, go back to the lower ten. If it is 5 or greater, go up to the next ten. 44 would go DOWN to 40 because there is a 4 in the ones place.
- Rounding to the nearest hundred... Look at the TENS place. If it is lower than 5, go back to the lower hundred. If it is greater than 5 go up to the next hundred. 572 rounds to 600 because there is a 7 in the tens place. Round up to the next hundred.
- Subtracting- be careful to borrow when you need to. Check your work when you are asked to.
- Circles : groups of Stars is number in each group So
Sam rolled a 5 and a 3. What will that look like? 5 circles with 3 stars in each.
Billy rolled a 2 and a 6. What will that look like? 2 circles with six stars in each.
Who has the most?? Sam has 5 x 3 = 15 Billy has 2 x 6=12. Sam has the most.
How many more? 15-12= 3
