SpellingThe format for our Spelling tests will be to give a pretest on the words on Monday and then send home the list of Spelling words on Tuesday in your child’s Spelling notebook. The first grade teachers follow a little bit of a different format for the Spelling tests, so please note the following! When you see your child’s Spelling list on Tuesday evening, you will see some of the words are highlighted. The highlighted words are words that your child did NOT spell correctly on the pretest. The highlighted words will be the ONLY words that your child will be tested on when the Spelling test is given on Friday. We feel that it is unnecessary to test a student on words that he/she already knows, so your child will only be studying the words that he/she missed on the pretest. Additionally, a word is marked as incorrect if the letters are written backwards. (i.e. "bog" = "dog" - the /d/ should be written facing the right way.) Also, some of the words on the list have asterisks next to them. This just indicates that the word is pulled from our writing series and is a word that is frequently used and read in first grade. Finally, there are some extra spaces below the Spelling list. If your child only misspells a few words, I may provide some challenge words and these will be handwritten into those spaces and highlighted if your child needs that extra challenge.
Spelling Words for Sept. Nov. 9-13
The new Spelling words will be posted on Tuesdays (or day after "pre-test" is given) - the day the students receive their own Spelling list in their notebooks. Also, when your child chooses an "activity" from the list for homework, please write which option was chosen IN your child's notebook IF it is not one that can be completed in his/her notebook. (ONLY the highlighted words!!!)
