Grade Level Expectations

Kindergarten 

Kindergarten is the year that students are introduced to the computer.  In Kindergarten students learn how to correctly identify the computer, monitor, keyboard, mouse, speakers and printer.  Work on improving mouse skills, learn how to open and close programs, and “log-in” and “sign-in” to programs.  They are introduced to the following special keys on the keyboard: enter, shift, space and period.  Students will work on typing their names correctly, as well as, start writing beginning sentences.  At the end of the year they create books with simple illustrations and sentences.

First Grade 

First Graders build on the computer skills acquired in Kindergarten.   Students must now be able to correctly identify computer hardware.  They are expected to independently use special keys such as: shift, enter, space, period, and question mark.  Students learn how to correctly “sign in” and “log in” to programs.  Students are introduced to saving and opening documents.  They work on improving mouse skills, as well as, how to open and close programs.

Second Grade

 

Second Graders will correctly identify computer hardware and explain how it is used. Students are encouraged to type with correct hands and fingers. Word will be reviewed and PowerPoint will be introduced. They are also introduced to Internet use and safety, as well as using it for research. This research will be used for projects in Word and PowerPoint. Students begin using computer generated graphic organizers to add to their collection of data for research.

 Third Grade

Third Graders are able to evaluate their growth towards independent computer use as they complete a technology skills survey at the beginning and end of each school year.  Keyboarding skills focus on home row keys.  Students are introduced to the components of the computer.  Students receive unique user names and passwords which allow them to save their work to a server.  They also become more familiar with word-processing and presentation software, and are introduced to desktop publishing.  They continue incorporating graphics, including digital photos into documents.  Research skills are a key factor as students use the internet as a source for information gathering.  Students create electronic portfolios which include assignments completed while using word-processing and presentation software.

Students will be instructed in the use of file management concepts. Students are given more opportunities to create graphics using a digital camera. Research skills play a major role as students use the Internet as a source for information gathering. Students create an electronic portfolio to include assignments completed using word processing and presentation software. They will begin working with multiple programs simultaneously.

Students will continue with their understanding of file management concepts. Opportunities will be given to students to create graphics using a digital camera. Research skills will continue to play a major role as students use the Internet as a source for information gathering. Electronic portfolios will be used to save students’ assignments. They will continue working in multiple programs simultaneously to select the best program for the job.
