Hello! My name is Sylvia Daly and I teach Visual Arts to Kindergarten through
Fourth grade students. I have been teaching in St. Tammany Parish for 26 1/2
years. This is my third year teaching in the Art Program.
I received my Bachelor of Education and Masters of Education degrees from the
University of New Orleans. I also hold the State of Louisiana Art
Certification and Discipline Based Art Education certification. I am a State
of Louisiana Highly Qualified Educator. I have been honored as 1999 Elk's
Teacher of the Year and a recipient of the Kelly Gene Cook Charitable
Foundation Grant for art. I am very proud of my career accomplishments and
thankful for the experiences I have had in educating elementary children.
I love teaching art to children and am looking forward to a great year!
Learning about ART means learning how to LOOK in new ways,
UNDERSTAND our world, and EXPRESS our experiences and dreams. In art class, we
learn about art by studying and experiencing four major aspects: ART HISTORY,
AESTHETICS, ART PRODUCTION, AND CRITICAL ANALYSIS.
In ART HISTORY, we study about famous artists and some of their
masterpieces, as well as the culture that influenced them.
AESTHETICS is the philosophy of art which is explained more simply
by what looks good or not, and why. It involves thinking and talking about
art. In discussions about art we learn to support our statements with facts
about the art product.
The making of art is ART PRODUCTION. When we produce art, we learn
to express our emotions and attitudes along with how to use different media.
We find personal pleasure and fulfillment through making art, as well as
understanding the artistic process.
Finally, art is about CRITICAL ANALYSIS, or critique. This is when
we evaluate art. When we critique art, we discuss what we see. We talk about
how the artist made the work and what type of media was used. We interpret the
meaning and learn to ask questions about it, such as, what did the artist want
to say or how did the artist want us to feel. Lastly, we make judgments based
on personal choice about the art. We decide if we like or dislike the artwork
and express why we feel this way.
The study of ART is a means to understand ourselves and our world!
